Michael Seim Obituary

Michael Joseph Seim passed away suddenly on Aug. 18, 2010. Michael was born on Sept. 30, 1972, in Derry, Northern Ireland. Michael moved to Dayton, Ohio, with his parents, Floyd L Seim and Hester Concannon Allison, when Michael was 3 months old.

He attended high school in Oakwood (Dayton), Ohio, where he participated in soccer and wrestling. He was captain of the wrestling team and took third at state. Michael also wrestled for Ohio University and the U.S. Navy military national team, where he was an All American in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Having a passion for fishing and the great outdoors, Michael settled in Montana after he visited the state on a fishing trip. Mike worked, doing what he loved, guiding fly-fishing trips and designing snowmobiles. Mike spent his most recent years designing mountain sleds for Arctic Cat. This job challenged his body and his mind and he was happy developing his creative side.

Mike was Montana. He can be seen in the rivers that he fished and the land that he hunted. His life and heart were invested in the mountains of Yellowstone Country and he will be remembered in every sunrise and sunset.

He married Kate, the love of his life and sister of his best friend, Mike Montgomery, in West Yellowstone in October 1999.

Michael's survivors include his wife, Kate Montgomery Seim; and his joy, their two sons Kerrigan, 7, and Cormac, 2. He is also survived by his mother and stepfather, Hester and Rick Allison; father and stepmother, Floyd and Kathleen Seim; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Sarah Seim; niece, Hadley Seim; nephew, Keaton Seim; two stepbrothers, Ricky Allison and David Brinkman; stepsister, Judy Allison; grandmother, Ethel Allison; aunts and uncles, Fred and Liz Allison, and Rob and Rhonda Allison; and many aunts, uncles and cousins throughout Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, England and Ireland.

Mike is survived in marriage by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Blair and Sue Montgomery; his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Paige Montgomery; and niece and nephew, Sara and Nathan Montgomery.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at the Community Protestant Church in West Yellowstone.

An additional memorial service will be held for Michael in the Dayton, Ohio, area in the near future.

Hey dad I miss you so much. Kerrigan has graduated from high school this year. I also made sure that he knew that you were with him in that moment.

I am now going into the 8th grade and I'm 13 now! I am also playing soccer like you did. And I got my first and hopefully only concussion in lacrosse.

I have come to realize that you are gone forever, my own dad. Because of this I have also realized that no matter how mad or sad I get nothing happens or changes.

Over the years I have learned that I have no choose but to except that I will never be able to see you're face, or hear you're soothing voice ever again.

Since I have realized all of these things, I have learned that you leaving me, mom, Kerrigan, granny, pap pap, and uncle Paul is the biggest obstacle that I have overcome.

I think about you now and I will keep thinking about you for the rest of my life. You have forever hurt me, and most of all you have helped. You have taught me to live life to the fullest. So that is what I will do.

I promise that I will become the man, brother, and son you have always wanted me to be.

I love you dad and you have forever changed my life.

Love,
Cormac Seim

Hey dad I miss you so much and so does the whole Seim family. I wanted to let you know that Kerrigan has graduated from high school and I made sure that he knew that you were with him, and that you were more proud of him than he could imagine.

I am now going into the 8th grade. I am playing soccer just like you did. I also played lacrosse and got a concussion.

I also wanted to let you know that I have come to realize that you are gone, and I will never get to meet you, my own father. I have also realized that getting angry at you won't solve anything. You have shown me over the years what it means to be strong. Because no matter what happens or what I do you leaving me, mom, Kerri and everyone else is the biggest obstacle I have overcome. I now know that we all must except that you have passed on to a better place and all we can do now is live our livest to the fullest like you wanted us to.

We love you dad and you will always be in our hearts and soul.

Love,
Cormac Seim

I just returned from fishing the Eastern Sierra in the Upper Owens river. Mike and I spent many wonderful days fishing this stretch of the river.
I thought of Mike as I sat in the bank and observed brown trout gobbling up hoppers as they floated down the steam. I felt mike was there with me.
He would have loved it....
I think if mike often. I'm now a father of two beautiful boys. I wish mike were here to share their joy of the outdoors as he did with his sons.

I miss you Mike.

I'm certain your casting hoppers at giant brown trout right now in fly fishing heaven.

Catch me a big one my friend.

Hey Dad,
you've been on my mind lately, and I see you in my dreams. I think about you every day and wonder what life would be like if you were here with me today. Granny and Pappap visited me in my recent time in the hospital after my snowboarding accident. We told the many stories of your adventures with your brothers as children.

Cormac is so grown up now! Ten years old, can you believe it?! My birthday is coming up too. I'll be turning 15! I really wish you were here to see us now. Our only regret is that you weren't with us longer.

Just this morning I was thinking about the time when we were playing video games when I saw smoke, you ran downstairs to the kitchen where you had lit the hamburger helper on fire! I miss those days.

Anyway I miss you. We all do. I love you Dad.

In a few days I will be in Montana on a trip that combines flyfishing, birdhunting, camping and simply hanging out with my dog. Like all others it will bring back memories of Mike's time as a sailor here in San Diego as he was just getting into flyfishing and flytying while recovering from a neck injury. I shared as much as I could with Mike and it was not long before he surpassed me, but he never failed to thank me, even years later when he asked me to join him on a float trip and allowed me to row for a stretch while he made a few casts. Fond memories of a truly fine man and father will be vivid in my mind.

Mike, You've been on my mind a lot lately. In the short time we knew eachother you had become one of my closest and dearest friends and once you let a person into your inner circle it was like you were childhood friends. The world is definately not the same without you buddy and I sure do miss our drives, talks, and just having a cold one together. Could really use your sense of wisdom in my life. Love you bud and you are missed.

Let me share a story that spotlights Mikes' heart..I was working at the "Cat shop" (Arctic Cat dealership Mike used to work at). Mike & I had made plans to go riding in the TeePee basin area...There was a young mechanic/trainee in the shop(I'll call him Scott), Who had Cereberal Palsy. On the morning Mike & I were to leave, Scott came up to me, & with kind of puppy dog eyes asked if he could go with us..Now, Teepee isn't real technical, but I didn't think Scott could handle the ride. I decided I would cancel the trip with Mike, & ride with Scott, as I didn't want to leave Scott behind, & "assumed" Mike would not want to be bothered with the added task of looking after Scott..Boy, was I wrong! "Bring him along, any predicament he gets into, we'll get him out of it!" It was a hell of a nice ride..Mike was a man of extreme riding capabilities, but never left a fellow sledder behind. Yer missed Mike.

Vance and I had the pleasure of getting to spend a week with Mike as our guide several years ago in southwest Montana. To this day, that week in April remains our favorite fly fishing adventure. Mike was an excellent teacher and a real gentleman. We also enjoyed meeting his wife, son, and mother-in-law one evening. What a beautiful family. At the end of the week, I told Mike, "You are a great guide, but even a better man." As we come to the end of another week of spring fishing, we remember Mike and the beauty of a life well lived. Peace to his family.

I met Mike when he was a young sailor stationed here in San Diego and really getting into flyfishing and I was able to help him a bit. A friend and I drifted the Madison with Mike in 2005 and had a great time with him. I just received an email from him earlier in the month thanking me for sending him some clients this September and saying he was looking forward to our fishing and bird hunting together when I come through in October. He was a great guy to fish with and will be sadly missed by many. My condolences to his family and friends.

My path crossed Mikes briefly on a guide trip in 2008 but he helped me create memories that will stay with me for a life time. He had me dangling off of some rocky point above the Lamar River trying to catch a "tank" of a fish when a bald eagle swooped down just above. I will never forget that sight or sound of the air over its wings. Thanks Mike for pushing me out there and creating such a beautiful memory. God bless

Mike realized early in life that spending his days in a cubicle lit with fluorescents was not for him. An avid outdoorsman, he ventured out to Montana to fufill his dream. He lived off the land and guided fly-fishing tours because that is what he loved to do.

He followed his heart. I strive to follow my heart as Michael did. We all should. Michael's spirit lives on in all those he has guided on their path as well as in those still searching for what they are looking for.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

So many years of wrestling together - cutting weight - beating each other up - laughing at our own misery as we dropped the last few pounds - true brotherhood. So sorry to lose him - we had recently reconnected on Facebook and he had invited me to come visit. I wish I had the opportunity to see with him again. Mike, Paul and I had so much fun together. So many memories - at least we can cherish those and hold on to the positive ways he has stayed with each of us. Much love. - adam

August 25, 2010

My favorite memory of Michael is from when I was very young, about three years old. I would visit my aunt, uncle and cousins in Ohio. I was a pretty hyper child as most of family can attest. I needed an outlet, so my older cousins would play 'flip' with me. Michael would hold my hands as I walked up him and then fliped backwards. Michael and Paul would take turns doing this with me for what seemed like forever. And whenever ever I saw Michael I would automatically say "Flip me! Flip me!" And he always would. He never denied me. That is a memory of Michael I will cherish, a little bit of joy to carry with me.

My heart breaks every time I think of your loss, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
On a trip home one summer about 20 years ago, I mentioned to Micheal that I liked the music that he was listening to on his walkman. He let me listen to it until I ran the batteries down on him. I was so sad when it was time for Hester, Rick, Micheal and Paul to return to America that I went up to my bed for a wee cry, under my pillow I found a present from Micheal - he had left me his tape cassettes. A small gesture but one that I have never forgotten.

We will never forget the joy and enthusiasm Mike brought to our lives. Whether it was watching him wrestle in
high school, play a "professional"

in our back yard after it invaded a
friend's house in Oakwood---he was al-
ways so happy, and his energy so con-
tagious. How wonderful that he was able to make a living doing what he
truly loved, in a place he loved with
the love of his life. Mike was Montana, but he was also Ohio. He will
never be forgotten here, for there are
many whose lives were touched and en-

I've had the pleasure of Mike's company on guided trips over the last 10 years on the Madison River, the most recent being this July with my oldest son. Having been a guide and instructor myself for many years I was keen to notice Mike's devotion and passion for his work. He made our last float so very special for my son and I, spending much time and effort to see to it that Jared thoroughly enjoyed his day on the river. I admired Mike greatly and will so miss his presence over the years to come as we continue to visit Blue Ribbon and the Yellowstone area.
