January 23, 1949 – January 10, 2018
Kent McAdoo passed away unexpectedly on January 10, 2018. Kent was born in Winfield, Kansas on January 23, 1949, to James and Joann McAdoo. Reared in Arkansas City, Kansas, Kent and his family often took camping trips to Colorado, instilling in him a love for the west. Kent married the love of his life and hometown sweetheart, Cathy in 1972, and soon after earned his bachelor's degree in Forestry (Wildlife Management) from the University of Idaho. Kent went on to earn a master's degree in Renewable Resources from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1975. Kent always maintained a fondness for the Midwest, and went back often to enjoy time with friends and family.
Kent and Cathy moved to Elko, Nevada in 1978. During Kent's 43 year career, which included work as a UNR research associate, an ecologist for Freeport McMoran, a consultant for JBR Environmental Consultants, Inc., and for the last 19 years as an area specialist for the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Kent was dedicated to the stewardship of natural resources in the state of Nevada and beyond. He truly took seriously God's call for us to be good stewards of this earth. His love for wildlife ran so deep that it was hard to distinguish between his work-life and his hobbies. He greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hiking, and his favorite work days were those spent "out in the field." He instilled love and respect for the outdoors in both his children and his grandchildren.
Kent's legacy extends well beyond the impact his professional work made on resource management in the state of Nevada. He loved his wife and family beyond compare and loved nothing better than to have them all together. Kent was born to be a granddad and he had a special relationship with each of his grandchildren. His affection for people was evident in the way he always made time to listen to a story or share his own. He was a teacher in every sense of the word, captivating his audience with his vast knowledge via presentations, journal articles, and Bible lessons. We will miss Kent's wit, his infectious laugh, his love for music, his poetry, his accordion playing, his friendship, and most of all, time spent in his presence.
Kent lived a life of servant leadership and sought to honor God in all things. He was "like a tree firmly planted by streams of water" (Psalm 1:3). The love of Jesus flowed in and through him to all that were blessed to know him.
Kent was preceded in death by his father, James F. McAdoo, his mother, Joann McAdoo, and his brother-in-law, Jim Bean. He will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife and best friend of 46 years, Cathy, his daughter Jamie Dickerson (James), his son Caleb McAdoo (Rachel), and by his 5 grandchildren, Samuel, Silas, Madeleine, Boone, and Adriana. Kent will also be fondly remembered by his sisters and brother, Carol Rehme (Norman), Wanda Bean, Rodger McAdoo (Kimberly), his 12 nieces and nephews, extended family, colleagues, and dear friends.
A celebration of Kent's life will be held on Saturday, January 20th at 2:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Church, 577 Walnut Street, Elko, Nevada 89801.
Memorial donations can be made to: The Kent McAdoo Legacy Scholarship, P.O. Box 1225, Elko, NV 89803-1225.
