Ronald Meyer Obituary
Ronald William Meyer
July 31, 1939 - September 30, 2024
It is with great sadness that the family of Ronald W. Meyer announce his passing at the "youthful" age of 85, after a brief battle with lung cancer.
Ron was born to William Adolf and Lelah Orva Rice Meyer on July 31, 1939, in West Allis, WI. He was one of five siblings.
Ron was always an industrious person, beginning when he was a child. Around the age of 10, he would go around the neighborhood, in Salt Lake City, and collect wire hangers which he would then sell to the local dry cleaners. He had a paper route, and baby sat the neighbor's kids. At the age of 14, without a driver's license, he was delivering flowers all over Salt Lake City. He was fired from that job because he drove a little too fast and the flowers frequently did not arrive in pristine condition. Ron served three years in the Air Force and took an early honorable discharge when it was offered to him. Ron always said that if there was any work available, he would never go hungry. His various occupations included: glazer, service station attendant, auto parts counter person, manager for VP oil, car salesman, furniture salesman, insurance adjuster, and lastly, he owned Superior Services in Elko, which he started as a janitorial business and expanded to include parking lot maintenance, where he earned the nicknames of Dusty and Stripes.
Those who knew Ron know, that at 85 years of age, he was in better shape, mentally and physically, than many people 30 years younger than him. Summers found Ron on the golf course and winters found Ron bowling in leagues. He was always trying to improve both his golf game and his bowling, never content to be just "good enough."
Ron met and married Joan Knapp in Elko. They had two children, a son, Curtis, and a daughter, Connie. Their marriage lasted 50 plus years. They would divorce, but they remained good friends. Ron then met Jennie Lage. They were together for 16 years.
Ron is survived by his wife, Jennie Meyer; former wife, Joan Knapp Meyer; son, Curtis Meyer; daughter, Connie (Sheldon) Custer; stepdaughter, Angela (Ben) Douglass; brother, Richard (Paula) Meyer; sister, Nancy Salisbury; seven grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. Ron is also survived by several nephews and nieces.
Ron is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Ruth Bitonio and Betty Hepner; and a great granddaughter, Autumn Wilde Meyer.
A special thanks to Steve Hansen for offering spiritual comfort to Ron. Ron is eternally grateful for the comfort Steve provided. Also, thanks to the staff and doctors at the Huntsman Cancer Institute ICU for the special care they gave Ron.
Ron's was a life well lived and his family and friends will miss him tremendously. So long for now, until we meet again.
Graveside services will be held at the Burns Memorial Garden at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, followed by a Celebration of Life at Dreez Restaurant, 406 Silver Street, Elko.
