Ronald "BIG R" Raymond Wynia
January 12, 1946 - July 10, 2025
Ronald "Ron" Raymond Wynia, affectionately known as Big R, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, at the age of 79. He was born on January 12, 1946, in Sioux Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, to LaVerne Kroksh and Raymond Wynia.
Ron spent his early years working on the Clubine Ranch in Lamoille, Nev., alongside his brother, Norman, developing a work ethic and resilience that would define the rest of his life.
A proud Vietnam veteran, Ron served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969, working as a diesel mechanic stationed at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. Upon returning home, he met the love of his life, Denise Marie Moody, while she was waiting tables at the Commercial Casino in Elko, Nev. The two were married on July 3, 1970, and in 1976, they settled in Battle Mountain, Nev., where they raised their family and built a home full of love, mischief, and the occasional prank.
Ron worked as an over-the-road truck driver for 17 years before joining the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), where he remained until his retirement in 2013. Whether navigating the highways or maintaining the roads of his home state, Ron was known for his dedication, unwavering dependability and he took pride in a job well done.
He is survived by his children, David Wynia, Tammy Lowe, Jason Wynia, Kevin Wynia, and Ashley Nunez; and his beloved grandchildren, Tyrell Lowe, Kolby Mays, Ryan Wynia, Rachel Vergara, Addison Nunez, Grace Lowe, and Presley Lowe.
Ron was a man of few words, but his quiet presence spoke volumes. He had a gentle soul and a sharp wit, known for slipping hot sauce into his kids' sandwiches and delivering unforgettable dad jokes with a straight face. His love for his family was boundless, expressed in the little things a knowing smile, a helping hand, or simply being there when it mattered most.
He found joy in the simple pleasures: casting a fishing line, watching old Westerns (especially those starring John Wayne), and cherishing peaceful moments with those closest to him.
Ron's legacy lives on in the laughter of his grandchildren, the stories retold around family gatherings, and the deep, steady love he poured into every chapter of his life. He will be deeply missed and remembered always with affection, admiration, and gratitude.
