Like others in these tributes, Sgt. Tonche was my drill Sargent at Ft. Polk, Louisiana in 1971. Echo-4-2 is still in my mind. He was a tough task master, who indeed, got me ready for my tour in Vietnam in 72/72. God Bless you and yours Brother. We nee so many more of your caliber.

I am late to this website.
I was a trainee of Sgt Tonche in 1 and have never forgotten him. Looking for him on the web I learned that he has passed. My sincere sympathy to his family. He helped us all grow up. Rest in peace.

Sgt. Tonche was my drill sergeant at Fort Polk in 1971. I can still hear him calling us out. That drill sergeant role is such a heavy duty job, young males without much exposure to the world are serious work.

I knew SSG Tonche at Fork Polk in 1971 and he was one of the best and toughest
Drill Sergeants I ever worked with.

Dear Tonche family, I am very sorry for your loss. I searched the internet for him since he was my drill instructor at Fort Polk in 1971 or so. He taught me so much. God bless him. May he Rest In Peace.

Iv said great things about you the past couple weeks
Iv shared my many memories With our family
And all there is left to say grandpas is something directly to you
I have prayed that today you hear me
You hear this
You are the greatest man I’v ever known
I am honored to be part of your legacy
Your 1st granddaughter
The little girl you let sit on your lap
And back wash In your cup
The man who Carried me to bed when I’d fall asleep on the sofa and who would tuck me in at night.
You were the man who would walk me to school and pick me up
I’ll never forget how you would wake me up with a feather and tickle my nose.
Thank you for taking the time to show me the moon and the stars while we laid on your hammock in the backyard
Thank you for teaching me the importance of forgiveness and locking me in a room with Simone and making us make up.
Thank you for being the man to plant sunflowers with me
Thank you for being the man who made me love to play with earth worms and Rollie pollies
Thank you for watching cartoons with me
Thank you for always missing me
Loving me
Thinking of me
Always finding away to show me you cared
I’ll never be able to find the words that explain the exact man that you were to me but
You are magnificent
Marvelous
I spent so much time studying-you
I adored you
You were magic Grandpa
A rare goodness on this earth

You taught me that being silent doesn’t always make you a fool.
Being wise doesn’t mean you have to have all the words.

Grandpa I just want to make you a few promises
I promise to always find goodness in the world
I promise to be strong and when I fall I will get back up
I promise to soak up my family and ally he different kinds of love I encounter in my life

Know that my children’s bed time stories will be full of stories of you
Grandpthe magnificent
I will make you proud not by my success
Or how much money I have in my pocket
But by the quality of life i Iive.
I will measure it By how many
People I leave better after I have met them
I am after all
Your granddaughter

I promise to make you proud grandpa
I promise I will spread my light that you passed down to me and carry you in my heart forever and always.

And I’ll never forget what you told me grandpa “dynamite comes in small packages”

Your sweetheart

Carlos is great pleasure knowing you. You were a father figure to me. I respect accepting me in your life and family. Always valued the time with us as a whole. I’m sure going to miss the great times we had, the memories we made together are in our heart. This planet sure is going to miss a great person, an example and a leader. We will miss you!!! Love you very much, will forever keep you in my heart.

When I think of Carlos, my first thought is family. Mom, Kim and I moved to Texas when Kim and I were 16; we lived with him and Linda. Although I only lived a short time with them, I learned quickly how important his family was to him and the love he had for my sister and his children. Of course, he embraced us into that circle.
He taught me how to play chess. Even though I wasn’t that great, he was always encouraging. My favorite memory was of him helping me with a Speech demonstration...tying a proper tourniquet. It was quite painful for me to do this in front of the class, but thanks to Carlos, I got an A!!!! He was very special that way, helping whenever necessary. There are many more great memories. He was a great brother-in-law and will be dearly missed!
All my love, Kathy

(11/28/20)
I got to know my brother-in-law Carlos when Mom, Kathy and I moved in with him, my sister Linda and their children in 1979.
I was 16 and very much in need of guidance and direction at that time. Carlos shared his love of God with me, and that started me on the right path. I lived with them for many years in Hawaii.
I would have to catch the bus for work at 4am, several times missing it. Carlos would come to my rescue, driving me to work so I could be there on time. He never got upset with me, and was always kind and understanding. I will forever remember his words of wisdom:
Always pay attention to your surroundings and listen to your gut instinct. Thank you Carlos for having such a big impact on my life, and being there when I needed you most. You will forever be missed and always loved. Kim

Papa Tonche, you were an amazing light in this world and you will be deeply missed. I wish I would have been able to spend more time with you but I will dwell in your memories. Thank you for raising an amazing family who have become some of my closest friends. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for them. Please continue to watch over us from above and tell my grandparents that I said hi and that I miss them.

Although I wasn’t blessed with the opportunity to have spent more time with Carlos, the time we did have together is something I will always cherish. I am heartbroken at the fact that I won’t get the honor of hearing the rest of your war stories, but in the little time we did have together you have shown me the everlasting impact and footprint that an amazing husband, father and grandfather can leave on his family and all those who had privilege of getting to know you. I hope that I can amount to being at least half the man that you were, with my own family some day. May he Rest In Peace and continue to keep everyone safe and watch over them.

It's never easy to accept the empty presence of a loved one especially when you don't get to say goodbye. Uncle Carlos will forever be remembered. I see his strong character in my dad. My dad misses his brother souch and wishes he could have spent more time with him but we just tell him to remember the good times they had. Uncle Carlos watch over us from heaven. He will be remembered as a loving caring father, uncle, grandpa, brother and husband. We miss you uncle!
