Not sure what to say?

It is hard to put into words what fills my heart. Charlie Russell was one of my closest friends. I met him when I was just a kid and he was working at KELP. He used to come into my dad's record warehouse to pick up the promo records and my dad would point him out and tell me, "that's a fine young man. He's really going to go places." Sure enough, Charlie did, becoming one of the most beloved air personalities and musicians in El Paso's recent history. Playing with Charlie in the KEHY Band (KSET Band, Charlie Russell Band, Charlie Russell Trio) through the years only increased my love, respect and admiration for this decent, honorable, wonderful man. I never heard him use an expletive, never saw him be mean or petty. He spread good cheer and happiness wherever he went and to everyone he touched. Charlie was one of the last of his generation, a gentlemen, a consummate ambassador of good will for country music and for the City of El Paso; a true example of decency, integrity, and giving. He has passed the torch and it is now up to us to live up to the example and high standard he set during his lifetime. As he blessed us with his life let us bless those around us with a spirit of tolerance, generosity, love, and great music.

I was so sad to hear of Charlie Russell's passing. He has been a friend of our family forever it seems. Three generations...my Mom & Dad, my brother and my nephew. He sang at our family reunions and it was always a pleasure to sit and talk with him after one of his great performances. We will miss him, he has been a pillar in the El Paso Community - I remember him and T-Casper on KHEY when I was a little girl, I woke up to them every single morning. May God Bless his family and friends... the warm and happy memories of such an outstanding man will live warmly in my heart.

My husband and I were so sad to hear of Charlie's passing. I first met Charlie in the early 80's when I was selling radio advertising. He was such a nice person and always had a great smile to give everyone. We saw him and his wonderful band perform so many times in El Paso and we loved them so much we hired them to play at our wedding. They were having so much fun that they stayed and play for an extra 2 hours! We loved his music and loved to listen to him on the radio. El Paso has lost a truly wonderful talent and he will be greatly missed. Our deepest symphthy to his family.

I was saddened to hear that Charlie has passed away. I was aware that Charlie was fighting cancer, because I would talk to him periodically. He was a dear friend over many years. When Charlie started his “music on hold” business, he would call me and discuss the types of telephone equipment he was installing his music on hold into.

Charlie was one of these rare individuals that was always positive and never had anything bad to say about anyone. It would be hard to count the number of people that will miss his sense of humor, his love of life, and his friendship.

I wish to convey my deepest sympathy to the family for this tragic loss.

Drew, Janice and I have always enjoyed the company of your Dad's visits to Pension Planners'office in the Bank of the West on Lee Trevino/Gateway East. Janice had known him for years as he worked on various promos. I reintroduced myself to him about 3 years ago by asking about you and the Delta Sig dance. Every time afterwards was long-time conversation about same friends in music, military, Ft Bliss, aviation, El Paso and of that young man of his- Drew. I learned to mention your Dad's name a lot when meeting new people; it always brought BIG smiles; the band, the songs, THE voice....of El Paso. He is greatly missed by many.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Charlie's passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. Being new to El Paso, Charlie was one of the first musicians I met in 1974 after moving there. He was one of the nicest men that I have ever known. Thank you for your friendship thru the years Charlie.

One of the greatest men I have ever known has ended his journey on earth only to share his kindness and wonderful smile with those in Heaven.
Charlie was very special to me. We worked together for a number of years at KELP and KHEY...he the morning DJ and I across the glass window doing the news. Much has been written about his love and compassion for others. To this I add; Charlie was above everything else the best of the best as a family man. I was around when the children came into the world and no one could be prouder of their children than my friend Charlie.Heaven is filled now with broadcasters we worked with and have passed on. Together they all have something in common...true professionals as broadcaster. To the Russell family I can only say, God Bless You All. When introducing me as we went into the news,I was Dick Glancey. Charlie came up with a new name, Glance Dickey. We will meet again and Charlie, can introduce me however he wants. Our loss is certainly heavens gain! I was honored when Clear Channell had me express my feelings to be broadcast in honor of Charlie.

How lucky were we to have had you as a father figure: to have known such patience, kindness, and love. Mr. R., as you were lovingly known to a bunch of teenage girls from the other side of the mountain, you will forever live in our hearts. Thank you for all the happy moments that we shared with you. To Mrs. R., Debbi, Chuck, and Drew, we love you and hold you in our hearts. Life has a way of putting time and distance between people but it never erases the imprint that special people leave in our hearts. --Girl Scout Troop 159

Charlie Russell: What immediately comes to my mind is a very nice guy.
Integrity, honesty, straight shooter. There really aren't words that cover the respect this gentleman earned over the years.
Thanks Charlie for being such a great mentor and elder.
And also thanks for selling me my first Pedal Steel Guitar and for teaching me "The Steel Guitar Rag" all those years ago. I think of you every time I play "the Rag". My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family and all the family of musicians who played with Charlie over the years.

My very deepest condolences to all of the Russell family. There are no words to convey what I feel. Feelings run deep in my soul and I know they will speak to Charlie. Charlie was truly a loving, giving and compassionate man. He gave of himself to everyone and was always such a gentleman. He loved his family with a passion. He is in Heaven looking down on us and will be so happy to see just how very many people loved and admired him. He will not be forgotten. Charlie left his legacy of love within the hearts of his family and friends. God Bless you Charlie.

Not only have I been able to hear stories of my grandfather (Conrado Morales) and my uncle (Coni Morales), but I've been blessed to be able to hear the magic that Charlie made when I was younger. My sincerest thoughts and prayers are with you Russell Family. Know that the entire Morales family is thinking of you all and carrying on those same stories. Charlie will continue to be a part of our family memories and mental storybooks. He will forever be celebrated as a legend. May he and my grandfather be able to continue making the magic they did.

I will miss my Uncle Charlie who can make feel that you are not alone even through his music. He had a spirit that we all need to have. He sleeps right but th e hope we have that one day we will all be together in heavn. Uncle Charlie will always be in my heart and close to me.

February 24, 2010

It was with sadness that I read about "Uncle" Charlie's passing. I first met him in 1961 or 1962 when I was a deejay at KELP. Later, he replaced Mike Hunter as program director. Charlie was always fair and honest with his staff as PD. Charlie and his family were also faithful members of First Christian Church of which I also was a member. Doctor James Jauncy was the pastor. I moved to Corpus Christi in late 1962 and didn't see Charlie again until the early 1980's. We ran into each other at the Nashville deejay convention. We also sat next to each other on the flight back to Dallas and reminisced about old times. Recently, former Kelpers have kept in touch via the internet. Some of my friends I had in El Paso are now gone including Bobby Fuller, Steve Crosno and Mike Oatman but none will be more missed by me than Charlie Russell. God bless you, his family, in this time of sorrow and take comfort in knowing how many friends Charlie had who will always celebrate his life on earth.

WOW the last few days have been so overwhelming. The kind words and sentiments from my father's many friends and fans have helped us get through this difficult time. There are no words that can tell you how much my mom and the rest of our family appreciate the overwhelming love and support we have received from every corner of the great southwest that my father loved so much.

We are so blessed.

Thank you!

February 23, 2010

When my son was little he would call Charlie each morning and tell him what happened on this day in the distant past. Charlie began to call him "Jimmy, our KHEY historian." This was at a time when my son needed a strong male figure in his life. Then, years later when Charlie and the Charlie Russell Band were playing a Valentine dance at the Shrine, I met my husband, the tall cool drink of water Jerry Shapiro. Cindy Bickford introduced us and I know Charlie must have ok'd me or Jerry and I would never have made it. I owe so much to Charlie. I think he knew.
My deepest condolences to Drewlene and the Russell families.

I had the privilege of working with Charlie at ClearChannel he was such an upbeat gentleman, always smiling, always having something nice to say or a story to share. I was stunned to hear of his passing though I knew he has been ill.

Charlie Russell and my husband Johnny Dollar, worked together at KHEY when radio was really fun. They were the best of friends and Charlie was loved by all. A true gentleman. I like to think of them together again enjoying their morning and afternoon drive slots, what a treat for Heaven. When my husband passed away, Charlie as always was there. He will be greatly missed by all of us. To his family, it has been wonderful to share in all of your lives. Thanks for sharing this marvelous man with allof us. Chas was John's favorite, of all the jocks he ever worked with.

I AM SO SORRY TO HEAR OF CHARLIES PASSING. HE GAVE ME MY FIRST JOB IN RADIO IN THE MID '60'S AT"BOSS"KELP AND WE WORKED TOGETHER FOR MANY YEARS. EVEN THOUGH WE WERE TOP 40 HIS HEART WAS ALWAYS IN COUNTRY MUSIC AND HE SHOWED IT LATER FOR MANY YEARS AT KHEY AND KSET. HE WAS AN IMPORTANT FIGURE IN EL PASO BROADCASTING.

It is so funny to think of the very first time my dad Conrado Morales (who is long gone) joined the Jones Hat Band. First of all he was the first Hispanic to play with Charlie. Boy did my dad look funny with all those beautiful western wear and cowboy hats that Charlie would make them wear. They always looked so nice. I remember when they used to play at the first Chunky Cheese in El Paso that was located I believe in the Northeast. I think I didn't like country music at the time but when the Jones Hat Band played everybody would be dancing and singing along with them. Years later my younger brother Coni played the drums with him also and we enjoyed many more years beeing able to know all the Russell family. It has been a pleasure to know that Charlie was part of the Morales family for many years. Mrs Russell we are still here for you if you ever need anything. May God bless you and your family and I know that Charlie and my dad are now driving God crazy playing their country music which they so much loved.
Sincerly, Rosa D. (Morales) Caballero

My dad Conrado Morales and my brother Conrado Morales, Jr. played with Charlie in the Jones Hat Band and the KHEY Band, respectively, for 15 years each. Charlie was like my brother's second dad. He recorded a record with Charlie at the tender age of 14. Our condolences go out to Drewlene, Chuck and the rest of the Russell family. We love you. We will miss Charlie and the unmistakable sound of his voice. I'm sure my dad and him are playing a gig in heaven.

Charlie Russell was the Best! It's no surprise to read such warm tributes about a man whose smile will be forever imprinted in our hearts and memories. He loved people and they loved him back. I had the pleasure to be his fiddle player in the early 70's with the Jones Hat band along with his son, Chuck. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!

Mr. Russell was our Boy Scout leader for Troop 30. He was a good role model for us boys and young men; he really lived up to the prinicples of Scouting and instilled those principles into our lives. And his family was great to know. I remember riding in their car and all the radio buttons were programmed to KHEY 690, what a hoot. To Mrs. Russell, Drew, Chuck and Debbie, my sincerest condolences go to you all.

I first met Charlie at KHEY in the 80's when my class took a field trip to the station. He was kind, caring and so genuine with us. Who would ever know that many years later, as I started my radio career at KSET that I would have the honor and privilege to work with him. I watched him, learned from him and considered him my mentor whether he knew it or not. He would always find the right words to tell me when I'd get down. He would always be the first to say great job as well. Such a caring, gentle soul. I was blessed to have had him in my life.

February 23, 2010

Charlie made me feel welcome when I arrived in El Paso. He was the long time morning staple on country radio and I was the new guy taking over on Y-96. We later worked together on KSET and I knew a few things about Charlie. He loved and lived country music and was very proud of the KHEY Brand. He introduced me to many people in El Paso and I was always amazed to watch his band play the rodeo.
Charlie Russell was a pro. He impacted my life and thousands of others.
An incredible man who loved his family and his city. He should be honored with something from the City. He and Marty Robbins put El Paso on the map.

Thank you for all your prayers while my son was ill but all is good now and I will pray for you and your family. I will miss your smile and kind words everyday. You are with the good Lord now.

How many lives can one man touch? Charlie Russell is in the top ranks on that score.
I had to laugh at his obit in the paper. The author can't be blamed, he didn't know Charlie like we did. He was a legend in E.P. radio long before he set foot inside KHEY's door. His tenure as Program Director of KELP 920 in the 1960s were years when KELP owned El Paso, with 80% audience shares.
I'm proud to say Charlie was the first boss to fire me, (at KELP) but he was kind enough to take me back. It was a lesson I never forgot.
Charlie Russell, your warm heart will long be remembered. Sleep well.

Charlie's voice was one of the things that I would wake up to in the morning in the mid 70's. I didn't realize at the time how much of a presence this man held not only in the broadcast community and the community of musicians, but to the people of El Paso and the surrounding communities that listened to him each day when he, along with Johnny Dollar, and T Casper, would do their morning show on 690-KHEY. There was a kind of security hearing him in the mornings and thru out the day. I was saddened to hear of his passing but am happy to have had the chance to have met him.

Our condolences go to Charlie's family. What a legend and a great friend. I think Charlie knew everyone and loved everyone. I enjoyed working with Charlie at KHEY - 690. Charlie called me from a radio engineering job and news director job in Farmington, NM to work with Tee Casper in KHEY's department before I went into enginering at KHEY. Charlie has been an inspiration to me and I know a lot of others in the field of broadcasting and music.
He is with God now. Thank you Charlie.

When I was a kid growing up in El Paso I always admired the velvet voice that came through my grandmothers radio as Charlie Russell would introduce the latest country and western hit single. Each year I would look forward for the rodeo, just so I could see Charlie and his band play.

For the past 13 years I was fortunate enough to get work with Mr. Russell at ClearChannel Radio and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to become friends with the legend.

Thank you Charlie for taking a young fan under his wing and showing me the radio ropes. I will truly miss you and all of those great conversations we would have in my office as we listened to some old Merle, Waylon, Marty, or Glen Campbell. Because of you, I became the radio person I became.

Country Music, Radio, and El Paso lost a LEGEND!

Thank you Charlie and may God bless you.

You will be missed.

I worked with Charlie at KHEY from 1974-1986. He gave me my "big break" in the radio business, hiring me from a little New Mexico radio station. I always appreciated that. I have since moved on to other things but had a good career in broadcasting and Charlie was a significant part of that. I know El Paso will miss him. My best to the family. Hope you remember me.

Charlie was one of the greats in early top-40 radio in El Paso. It was 920 KELP with Charlie in the morning, and Crosno in the afternoon. Then Charlie jumped to KHEY because of his "inner country child." He got me a job there in 1970, and that began my radio adventure.

We will miss Charlie at the Leon Metz Radio Show, where Charlie was Leon's manager, and the radio show's guiding light. Vaya con Dios, Charlie!

When I was a kid, Charlie would tolerate me calling in to request "Does a Chicken Have Lips, Does a Rattlesnake Have Hips". My earliest memories of radio include Charlie and I am so very fortunate to have worked with him. Charlie set standards we can all aspire to. When I would see Charlie come to work in the morning, it made me want to try harder, be better and do good things for other people, because he embodied all of that. The bumper sticker on Charlie's van said, "Caution: Driver Singing" and it tipified the joy that Charlie shared so generously from his big Southwest heart.

Thank you Charlie for your high standards, generous spirit and joyful presence which will all remain in our fond memories of you.

God bless you and your wonderful family.

I am one of Charlie Russell's co-workers at the radio station. He was such an amazing man, always full of life and charm.
