Don Patterson Obituary

Dr. Don Howard Patterson born June 29, 1930 and died July 4, 2008. He passed away from multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow. His last days were filled with joy, peace, warmth and family love. He wishes to inform the readers of El Paso Times that he was very grateful for the 31 years he spent in this wonderful city. Dr. Patterson was born in Chicago, Illinois, got his BA from Northern Illinois University, his Masters degree from Western New Mexico University at Silver City, New Mexico, and his Doctorate from California Coast University in Santa Ana California. His dissertation was entitled "Dysfunctional Behavior in the American Public Schools: A Search for Understanding." Dr. Patterson spent most of his career teaching Spanish Language and Literature, History/Social Studies, Industrial Technology (Drafting, Project Planning, Electrical Constructions and Uses, Cabinetry and Finish Woodworking, Sheetmetal Layout and Construction, Building Contruction and Manufacturing). Because of the problems in behavior which have invaded the Public School Systems in recent years, Dr. Patterson left the subjects which he loved most and began an intensive study of Special Education. After teaching children with special learning problems in both Gallup, NM, and El Paso, he retired from public school and taught briefly at UTEP, taking over a Theories of Learning class for an Education professor who needed time to write a book. After retirement at age 65, Dr. Patterson took up piano tuning and repair just to stay busy.

For the short time that we knew Don, we thoroughly enjoyed his company and his dissertations at our Pikes Peak Model A Club Meetings. I can still see him bouncing along in his Model A going up Gold Camp Road with us when we saw all the Aspens turning to their golden hues. Our condolences to his family. Larry & Karen Batman

The good Doctor and I met when he volunteered to help others by enrolling in a medical clinical trial. We expanded our connection when we discovered a mutual interest in motorcycles and antique cars. Then I learned of the Doctor's skill with player pianos, languages, writing, and the list goes on. I was glad to hear Dr. Patterson was able to tour the US on his Honda cruiser, and hope his last days were comfortable.

My condolences to the family of this wonderful man. I never knew him, but my love for learning reflects on his beliefs and accomplishments. Being an educator, I would like to read his thesis. Many behavior problems overshadow our children's learning.

You never told me you were a Doctor. You never mentioned your many impressive accomplishments and efforts. You were just simple, quiet in demeanor and had a hell of a great sense of humor. You rebuilt my piano which in 5 years will be 100 years old. The player mechanism still works great. Thank you for everything and thank you for the music in our home.

My condolences to the entire family at the loss of Sara and then more recently Don. I am so glad they joined us at WVC and it was a delight to all of us who had the pleasure of having them join us. Don will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
