Eduardo Caraveo Obituary

EL PASO -- An Army psychologist who was raised in both Juárez and El Paso was among the victims in the deadly shooting at Fort Hood Thursday in which 13 people were killed. Maj. Eduardo Caraveo, 52, a graduate of Bowie High School who grew up in Segundo Barrio, was in the Readiness Processing Center in Fort Hood when a gunman opened fire, killing his victims and wounding 30 others. Caraveo was described by family and friends as a "great man." "He was a very determined, successful man. He was a role model for his family," said his son Eduardo Caraveo from his home in Tucson on Saturday. Maj. Caraveo, who had been in the Army for 10 years, was to be deployed to Afghanistan for at least one year and had just arrived at Fort Hood on Wednesday. The rampage at Fort Hood has been described as one of the worst mass-killings in a U.S. military installation. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, has been identified as the shooter. Hasan was wounded in an exchange of gunfire and remains hospitalized. Caraveo's son declined to comment on the way his father was killed and said he prefers to remember his father as happy and charismatic. Eduardo Caraveo said his father was the only one who went to college out of seven children in his family. "When my cousins saw what he did with his life, they all wanted to go to college," said Eduardo Caraveo. Maj. Caraveo's family moved from Juárez to Segundo Barrio when he was a child. He graduated from Bowie High School, then he attended the University of Texas at El Paso, where he earned a bachelor of science and then a master's in counseling in 1980. Maj. Caraveo, a 20-year clinical psychologist, completed his doctorate degree at the University of Arizona and received a post-doctorate certificate in psychopharmacology for psychologists at New Mexico State University. "He was a very accomplished person who helped a lot of people," his son added. Maj. Caraveo's older brother, Fernando Caraveo, said he was saddened by his brother's death. "I am very sad because I am very sick and now this makes it worse," said Fernando Caraveo, 71. He said his brother was a hard worker and liked school. He said the last time he saw his brother was about a year ago when they had a family reunion. Rudy Valenzuela, of Tucson, described Maj. Caraveo as his best friend. "I'm 48 years old and I had never had a friend like him," he said. Valenzuela and Maj. Caraveo met 22 years ago through mutual friends. Since then, Valenzuela said, they became very close. Valenzuela said he feels sorry about what happened at Fort Hood and how his friend died, but he doesn't want to blame anybody. In his heart, Valenzuela said, he knows Maj. Caraveo would not have hatred toward the person who took his life. "He (the shooter) had a problem with society, and part of my friend's job was to help these kind of people," Valenzuela said. Valenzuela said Maj. Caraveo may have understood what Hasan was going through if he was harassed because of his religious beliefs. Hasan's family members have told media outlets that Hasan was the target of harassment and ridicule. "He (Maj. Caraveo) was Mexican and he knew what it was to be treated differently," Valenzuela said. Caraveo's son said the family is waiting for the body to be released by the military. Maj. Caraveo is survived by his wife, Angela Rivera, who lives in Virginia, six children and six siblings -- four of whom live in El Paso.

I attended the Army Reserve Component Captains Career Course with MAJ Caraveo in June 2009. He was a wonderful man whose personal story of resilience and selfless service inspired me. I think about him every Memorial Day. Today I pray for his soul and the well being of his family, whom he loved dearly.

Just as no man has power over the spirit or can restrain the spirit, so no one has power over the day of death. Just as no one is discharged during a war, so wickedness will not allow those who practice it to escape. All of this I have seen, and I applied my heart to every work that has been done under the sun, during the time that man has dominated man to his harm. (Ecclesiastes 8:8,9). So it is with sadness of this senseless death against Eduardo Caraveo. Our prayers go out to his family and friends for their loss.

To Caraveo's Familia, wife Angela, his sons Eddie, Jose, John Paul, stepdaughters, and grandson.

I keep telling Rudy every day we talk that our dear dear friend "Caraveo" is still hear but I have finally accepted that my dear GOD needed "un Angel y si llama "Caraveo"

Angela,
I never had the pleasure of meeting you but Caraveo was soooo happy and would go on and on about how he found the love and she is the one... Rudy and I just like typical buddies would say to him "Are you sure Caraveo...?" and he said si,si, si, I love this woman...so he was happy and he fullfilled so many of his career dreams and was the type of friend that made everybody feel like he was your best friend. The work he did for my program serving our youth in transition all over Southern Arizona was unbelievable and all the kids loved Dr. C.

Eddie and Jose,
So many years since I have seen you guys when you were boys was the last time before I moved to Phoenix. Remember your Dad loved his sons soooo much and I remember how he wanted to have a good retirement plan and take care of his sons and they can have it all...
After 25 years being Rudy's friend and my friend for 22 years, I say to "Caraveo" that I asked GOD "Will please you send our buddy a hug from his sisterfriend Anna and his brotherfriend Rudy because we will see him again one day....the funny nice guy Angel"Caraveo" who knowing him is running the Angel department....

God Bless to all "que Dios bendiga a toda la familia" Angela and Eddie,Jose,John Paul, daughters and grandson

Sinceramente,

Dear Caraveo Family,
My son and I were patients of your husband. I still have trouble believing that he is gone. I can't imagine the pain you must be going through. Dr. Caraveo was one of the most wonderfull human beings I have ever met. He was caring and non-judgemental. He believed in the goodness that is supposed to be in everyone. My heart is broken. I will always remember him.

To the family:

I work for the Federal Bureau of Prison in Washington, DC and I met Eduardo for the first time approximately 10 months ago after one of his training sessions. He was such a positive upbeat guy. He told the story of how he grew up and it really hit home with me. He also told the funny story of how his wife was the dancer in the family and he just followed her footsteps. Everytime I would see him or speak to him at work, he would always say "life is good". Stay strong family. Everything will get a little easier as time passes by.

I am so sorry to the family for this loss. I'd like to share a verse from the Bible and hope it brings you comfort. Isaiah 57:15; "For this is what the High and Lofty One, who is residing forever and whose name is holy, has said: 'In the height and in the holy place is where I reside, also with the one crushed and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly ones and to revive the heart of the ones being crushed.'"

Estimados Gabi Y Eduardo,

Angela, Tiffany, Megan, and JP - Our sympathy goes out to each of you. Eduardo's impact on all of our lives was HUGE. His smile, his laugh, his crazy sense of humor, his slurping of coffee (medium from McDonald's every day, $1.62, best coffee around!!) and the songs are missed so much each day in the van pool. He never failed to make us laugh, no matter how corny the joke or statement! We still laughed.

Eduardo never allowed silence in the van. If we were trying to be quiet, he would poke whoever was next to him and make sure everything was alright, or he would break out in a song (Barney's I Love You, was an all time favorite!). Quiet rides were not an option, unless he wanted to sleep!

We know he is watching over us as we travel to and from work every day and we appreciate it! He is missed so much.

We hope the shared memories will comfort you and provide you the understanding that Eduardo was truly one of a kind. Hopefully you will also come to understand how may lives he impacted on a daily basis. Thank you for sharing him with us.

You are in our prayers.

November 14, 2009

To The Family Of EDUARDO CARAVEO:

The members and Staff at Behold The Lamb Ministries would like to take this moment to send our prayers to you and ask that The Great God of this Universe will carry you through this storm. We were saddened to learn of the incidents that occurred at Fort Hood.

We want you to know that "since Jesus came to dwell with us, we know that God is acquainted with our trials, and sympathizes with our griefs. Every son and daughter of Adam may understand that our Creator is the friend of sinners. For in every doctrine of grace, every promise of joy, every deed of love, every divine attraction presented in the Saviour's life on earth, we see "God with us." "[DOA, by EGW] We know that sorrow and pain and are all in the "present tense". We pray that the person responsible will ask for forgiveness we pray that we as humans will forgive the person responsible. "The work of redemption will be complete. In the place where sin abounded, God's grace much more abounds. The earth itself, the very field that Satan claims as his, is to be not only ransomed but exalted. Our little world, under the curse of sin the one dark blot in His glorious creation, will be honored above all other worlds in the universe of God. Here, where the Son of God tabernacled in humanity; where the King of glory lived and suffered and died,--here, when He shall make all things new, the tabernacle of God shall be with men, "and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God." And through endless ages as the redeemed walk in the light of the Lord, they will praise Him for His unspeakable Gift,---"[DOA,by EGW]

As we approach the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas we know that your pain may be greater due to your Loved One's absence. We will be praying with and crying in our hearts. We welcome any prayer request that you may have not only today but in the coming weeks, months and years. We will listen, we will cry with you and we will present all petition before the throne of Christ.

WE LOVE YOU IN CHRIST.

I was stunned the other day when my wife called to tell me that Eduardo's name was among the fallen. He was a good friend when we were at Texas Tech. We played softball together, and soccer against each other. I have a lot of good memories of time spent with him, Rosaura, and Lalito--who is older now than we were then. Eduardo introduced me to his family in El Paso, and showed me where he grew up in Juarez. Like others, I too remember his eyes and his smile; he seemed to fully enjoy the moment he was in. Our hearts go out to his family. His optimistic spirit will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to call him friend.

Eduardo was a good friend that I met through the BOP. We met early in his career and stayed friends via the internet and telephone. I will sadly miss his smile and friendship. He always had something good to say about someone. I pray the Lord is with you during your time of sorrow and He wraps His loving arms around your family.
