GARY SCHABACKER Obituary

Dr. Gary W. Schabacker of El Paso, Texas was born on September 4, 1938, and passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on December 26, 2017. He is survived by his wife, P.J., children Lynn, Victor, Glen, Paul, Steve, and Sarah, thirteen grandchildren, and one (soon to be two) great grandchildren. Gary and his brother Bob grew up in Rockford, IL. Gary contracted polio as a boy, but overcame it and eventually became a competitive swimmer in high school. He studied accounting at Rockford College but his passion, which his beloved Aunt Mary encouraged him to pursue, was medicine. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1964. Upon receiving his medical license, Gary put his skills to use serving in the United States Army. He did a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1970-1971, commanding the 71st EVAC in Pleiku, Vietnam. He was recognized for his service with Army and Vietnam service medals. First and foremost, Dr. Schabacker was a healer. Medicine was his calling, and he devoted his life to it with a fervent passion. His patients received care that was knowledgeable and compassionate. He treated so many people in El Paso that it was nigh impossible to go out with him and not have him run into a former patient who wanted to express their sincere gratitude for his care. Family lore has it that when his eldest child was on a train tour in Europe, she met a fellow traveler who was from El Paso and was a patient of his. He was a beloved father and husband. Gary and P.J. opened their home to foster children for a time in the early 1970's, providing a stable and loving home to countless children in the foster system in addition to his own kids. A kind disciplinarian, he had high expectations for good behavior that his kids strove to meet, succeeding occasionally. He loved them fiercely and always guided them to a better way. He passed his wisdom, love and his impeccable work ethic on to his children. As a business partner, his financial acumen rivaled his medical skills. His partner, Dr. Dick Harris, remembers first meeting Gary as a sharp-dressed young resident with his brass shining and his pants creased. Upon Gary's return from his Army service in Vietnam, Dick remembers a very different man showing up in his office with long red hair and sandals on, but the same sharp surgical skills. Gary and Dr. Harris ran one of the finest surgical practices in El Paso and shared a successful partnership for 23 years. After Dr. Harris retired, Gary worked to establish El Paso Surgical Associates with many other prominent surgeons in the El Paso area. He finished his career specializing in breast care with the Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso Breast Care Center. Although many patients could not afford care, none were turned away and many were healed under his care. He was a passionate outdoorsman who shared his love of fishing with anyone interested in learning. As adults, all his children can fish thanks to his instruction, but none can catch as well as he did.. Summers and weekends were spent fishing, water skiing, hiking, and camping when he and P.J. weren't rooting for their kids at soccer games and horse shows. As his children grew, he and P.J. traveled with family friends to explore the finest hikes in the country. He will be remembered for many things, including his compassion, his sense of humor, his beautiful singing voice, his whistling skills, his curly red hair and distinctive mustache, and his passion for El Paso's people and history. He's now gone to see a man about a duck, and he wants all the men to be sure to get their prostates checked, and the women to do their breast exams! His family requests that donations be made in his name to Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso Breast Care Center c/o Sandra Villagran RN. Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso Breast Care Center 4800 Alberta Ave El Paso, TX, 79905 915-216-6040 The family has elected not to hold traditional funeral services, but instead will hold a Celebration of Life. This will take place on Saturday, February 17th at Ardovinos' Desert Crossing from 3-8 p.m.

In 1972 while traveling through El Paso. My wife Bonnie became ill. We went to Dr. Solomos who we knew. He sent us to Dr. Schabacker who diagnosed my wife's ruptured spleen in a matter minutes. He got her into the OR at Southwestern General and literally saved her life and made it possible for her to raise our children and enjoyed her grandchildren. Thank you Gary.

I am saddened beyond words to find this obituary for Dr. Schabacker. We no longer live in El Paso and I was unaware of his passing. I worked as the Office Manager and office RN for Dr. Schabacker and Dr. Harris for many years. I have never known finer surgeons than Dr. Schabacker and Dr. Harris. I have never known a finer person that Dr. Schabacker. Although the practice was so busy, Dr. Schabacker never came into the office without a smile..... and usually a joke. It was my great honor to work with this outstanding doctor, and outstanding man. He made me grow as a nurse and to become a better nurse. He taught me so much - on so many levels. I loved Dr. Schabacker and was so privileged to work with him. Additionally, he saved my mother's life when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. With his passing an exceptional, and unique, physician was lost. But I know his legacy will always live in the patients that he cared for and in the hearts of all of us who love him so much.

Dr. Schabacker and Dr Harris are the two surgeons that I most admired and trusted. I was blessed to know them when I first started to work at Sierra Medical Center and as I time went by I grew to love and admire them more and more each day - Best surgeons ever. God has an awesome doctor in heaven. RIP

I am so sorry to hear that such a great man has passed. He truly was an angel of mercy. I can truthfully say that Dr Schabacker And Dr Harris saves my mother's life when I was 11 years old. I remember this big red headed giant of a man come into the surgery waiting area to tell my Dad that my mom will live after emergency surgery. They were in there for a very long time. I cried and Dr Schabacker came over and gave me a big hug. I will never forget that I went into nursing later on when I was 17 yrs old and on the surgical floor Dr Schabacker came on the floor one morning in a Hawaiian shirt and Sandles . He reacognized me by my last name Russell and asked how my mom was doing, such a good man.
Peace and faith in God be with PJ and Family. God Bless

My thoughts and prayers go out to PJ and the rest of the Schabacker family. Gary was first and foremost a surgical mentor. Without a doubt I am a better surgeon because of him. Maybe he is no longer physically here to operate and make patient lives better, but every time I go into the operating room i am sure I take a skill or knowledge learned from Gary with me, and thereby he continues to impact patient lives even in death.
Gary was also a friend. He was just a great and influential "character". He will be missed. Thank you Gary.

There are not enough words to say about Dr. Schabacker. He was a physician who didn't sugar coat any thing, he told his patients the good and the bad, he had compassion and a kind heart.

Back in 1980 my Grandfather was told by several doctors nothing could be done for him, but my family was told by a friend about Dr. Schabacker. I remember when my Grandmother called the office to make an appointment for my Grandfather, immediately was told to bring him in. We were so grateful he wanted to see him on very short notice.
After doing several test on my Grandfather, Dr. Schabaker gave us the good and bad. My Grandfather had only 90 days to live, could try surgery but it would be very risky and may not have a good result.

My grandfather had the surgery and I remember my Grandmother saying Dr. Schabacker told her, he didn't expect him to do well because it was more complicated than first expected.
Well.. my Grandfather survived , had a few more minor surgeries and was officially in remission starting in 1990. He got to live till 2007, he was 90 years young.

Dr. Schabacker was our miracle doctor with remarkable hands , our angel, was sent to us and who our family is eternally grateful.

Thank you Dr. Schabacker. Rest in Peace.
Keeping your family in our thoughts and prayers.
