Jose Cisneros Obituary

Jose Cisneros (April 18, 1910--November 14, 2009) Jose Cisneros (99), the artist, died peacefully Saturday morning of natural causes. His historical illustrations depicting the borderlands are internationally acclaimed, most notably by former President George W. Bush, when he awarded Jose the National Medal of the Humanities in 2002. Jose's life began humbly on a ranch in Villa Ocampo, Durango, Mexico, but the Mexican Revolution forced him and his family north. The mostly self-taught artist's love of drawing began as a young boy. His formal education only reached the sixth grade, yet his love of learning, especially history, never ceased. Jose combined these two passions in his pen-and-ink historical illustrations which grace the pages of hundreds of books. A very spiritual man, Jose walked to daily Mass up until the very last few weeks of his life. Jose had a great adoration of nature, passion for the arts, and fondness for Spain. He is preceded by his wife, Vicenta, and eldest daughter, Inez Watson. He is survived by his four remaining daughters: Irene Solla, Magdalena Villarreal (Robert), Patricia Cisneros-Pride, and Rita Sillas (Ray). He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. His family will always remember Jose's zest for life, sense of humor, and strong will. He will be greatly missed. The viewing will be at Martin Funeral Home on Montana from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Tuesday, November 17, followed by the rosary at 7:00 p.m to be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Hueco St. Visitation will also be at St. Joseph Catholic Church from 5 p.m to 8 p.m. The Funeral Mass will also be held at St. Joseph's on Wednesday, November 18, at 9:30 a.m., followed by the burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. The Pallbearers will be Tony Medrano, Willie Montoya, Martin Lopez, Steve Villarreal, Ray Sillas, Chris Connerly, Xavier Villarreal, and Vince Villarreal.

December 1, 2009

I first met my tocayo, Jose Cisneros, in the mid'80s when I was Superintendent of the newly estabished San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. I had not been aware of his work but knew something was amiss as his fame had preceded my arrival in San Antonio when peope who knew of his work but had apparently never met him, greeted me as him. I was quick and disappointed in having to tell them that I was not that Jose Cisneros, the "true" Jose Cisneros. I was simply a Jose Cisneros. We became freinds and met several times in the years to follow. I was fortunate to have the New Mexico Legislature recognize him in 2001 for his work in illustrating the Spanish Colonial history of the state. He was a great man and an artist. He will be sorely missed but one must envy the full life that he led. Que dios lo bendiga tocayo.

To the family of dear don José,
Please know that the world shares your loss. What an absolute joy of life he had and his humbleness was something all would do well to emulate. His works of art will never be forgotten. I am lucky that I have only to look at the walls in my house and to open my books, and there is his vision, shared with all. I am honored to have know this great man and to have had the opportunity to hug him and thank him for sharing his time and talent with all of us.

¡Via con dios, don José, El Adelantado!

Dear Patsy and all other Cisneros family members,

Your dad was such a wonderful, talented person! I am so happy that we were able to see him in April at Jane and Sheldon's house during the burial time of my dad. (Evan Haywood Antone) My father actually did not have so many close friends, but Jose was one of them. They both shared a love of the border, art, design, El Paso, Carl Hertzog, and working together on projects for Texas Western Press. We used to visit your parents around the holidays, and your mom would send us home with tamales. May God shower His blessing on the soul of Jose Cisneros, such an amazing person, such a unique soul!!! I send my sympathies.

PS Right on the wall near my computer are two works of Jose Cisneros looking over me! Seems like my whole life I enjoyed those beautiful drawings in my environment, and I will continue to do so. What a legacy!

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your Dad. It was a privilege and honor to have known him. His influence on and appreciation for the arts will always be cherished. Mr. Jose Cisneros was a wonderful person; he was always so kind and considerate to me and my family. I enjoyed seeing him every opportunity I had. He told me when I was a little boy he put me on his desk while he worked. His influences of art lead me to study and have a career in Architecture. As a young man, when I visited I helped him trim the palm trees in the front yard. I liked helping him when I could, but mostly liked watching him work. I remember lunch on Sundays being so much fun; it was hard to move from the table because my plate was always being served. He and his family both touch my life I will never forget them. I will cherish the many memories. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of sorrow.

Almost forty years ago I purchased a Cisneros print of a cowboy gazing at the Franklin Mountains. A wonderful portrait of a scene I witnessed every day as a student at UTEP. I don't live in El Paso now, but visit every chance I get. When I can't see the Franklins, I can always look at my Cisneros print. He must have been a man of divine vision to have portrayed the world, as he did, with such love and understanding

To the family of Mr. Jose Cisneros, what a beautiful life this man lived. So simple and humble yet his art, books, and knowledge was greater than he ever gave himself credit for. Such a very sweet and loving man whom every morning went to morning mass. He was a friend to all and he will greatly be missed. His life story is an example to all on what a kind hearted man, filled with talent and determination can accomplish. Although he is a well known artist he continued to live his life in modesty. We shall never see another man like Mr. Cisneros for truly he was one of a kind man. He lived a full life and while he will be missed, he is now at home with his maker and his beloved wife.

My sincere condolences to the Cisneros family who provided such wonderful care for their father. May God bless you. Visiting with Mr. Cisneros a few months ago left me with a treasured memory of him as a great artist and gentleman. Except for his eyesight,he seemed hardly to have aged since I first met him 35 years ago at the home of Carl and Vivian Hertzog. He is one of El Paso's great treasures and his art will teach future generations about the history of the region that he loved. He will be missed and always remembered.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Jose Cisneros. I just recently left El Paso where I was Pastor of La Purisima Socorro Mission. I never new Jose personally, but we sold books with his art work in them and signed by him in our gift shop at the Mission. One of our parishioneers, a relative of Jose, to whom I took communion showed me many of the art works done by Jose. I heard of him from so many of our parishioners who praised him highly. I just wanted to express my sympathy, and that of the community of La Purisima.

Sincerely,
Rev. Joseph Nelson, OFM

My wife Irene and I only knew Don Jose for over 9 years but, even if we had known him for all 99 years of his wonderful life, it still would not have been long enough. We would have yearned for more. Don Jose was so much more than pen, ink, and paper - he was love personified. We will miss him very much and our thoughts go out to Irene, Patricia, and the rest of the family.

Today, Sunday, I wrote to the Conde de Tepa and Gentil Hombre de su Santidad in Madrid--Manuel Gullon y de O~nate, the descendent of Juan de O~nate the Conquistador depicted in the large equestrian sculpture by John Houser at the El Paso Airport. The following is the message he asked me to convey to Jose Cisneros' family:

My sincere condolences to the family of Don Jose Cisneros. His illustrations of the various peoples who developed the early border region influenced my own interests in history. My strongest memory though will be watching him at 8:00 a.m. Mass at our Parish of St. Joseph every Sunday. I was concerned that he was not there the last couple of weeks as I have consistently seen him there since I was a child. After Mass, he would slowly walk home a few feet away from our Parish. His presence in church was that of a faithful and humble servant of the Lord. May our Father in Heaven bless this kind man who has done so much to enlighten all of us about our region's history. Our Parish and our community will truly miss him but we will always be enlightened by his many artistic treasures and the simple faith he exhibited in life.

As a little boy nearly 55 years ago, I spent countless hours with Jose at the City Lines and I always admired his paintings, especially the one of JFK. He was a quiet man with a sense of humor and a great deal of pride. Yes, it was a privilege and an honor to have spent the time with him and it influenced greatly my appreciation for the arts. For this I am eternally grateful. He left footprints that will never be forgotten. I wish to express my condolesences to his family.

What a privilege it was to have visited with Jose last month. At the age of 99, he looked wonderful and was as charming as ever. I always enjoyed my visits to his home and collected his drawings for many years. He was a beautiful human being and his presence will be missed. We, the city, the state, the nation and the world are a little better off for having had this humanitarian walk among us for so many years. He lives on through the artistic production he left behind. Adios mi amigo--you touched my life and I will never forget you.

Thanks to Tom Lea advocating Cisnero's work in the 50's and introducing him to some many people at El Paso Public Library and Texas Western Press who published his work his career was on its' way. I found some of his work in an australian achive via Texas Western Press circa 50's. Met him once a few years ago at Celia Munoz's OJOS exhibit. He was a neat person.

Jose Cisneros's historically correct ink drawings were a great early influence for me, a young student, in the 1950's I had the honor of meeting him in the 1990's. What a gentleman! May he continue to faithfully represent all he encounters, en los cielos! Gracias, Amigo!
