Rachel Deterra Obituary

Rachel Spencer Deterra

El Paso - Rachel Spencer Deterra passed away on Friday, April 2, 2021.

Rachel was 86 years old. She was born in Anapra, New Mexico to Prisciliano Spencer and Mauricia Spencer (Garcia) on November 21, 1934.

Rachel cherished her husband, Joseph James Deterra, deceased 2016. They shared 58 years of marriage. She unconditionally loved and cared for her children.

Even as a child, she showed respect for her parents, a trait she continued even as she cared for them later in their life. She was patient with everyone and forgiving to all. She had a true knack for intuition and being one step ahead of others which gave her pause at times to let things unfold. This helped with her own children as she kept a watchful eye as they learned through experience. She may have seemed quiet at times, but she was well of aware of any surrounding circumstances and when needed, was ready to step in to take charge. This culminated into the peaceful, loving home that she and her husband created for their children and friends.

In her home are a number of elephant figures, all with their trunks facing up. She felt this was a sign of good fortune and positive energy that showered upon everyone in her home. This good fortune also seemed to have earned her a lucky hand at slot machines! Everyone always wanted to get a touch of Rachel's good luck. Words and languages were a joy to her as she continued to love crossword puzzles with her Siamese cat nuzzled in her lap. Her unconditional love and kindness will live on with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Victor Albert Deterra and Shawna Land; daughter and son-in-law, Valerie Deterra Hernandez and Edmund; daughter, Elizabeth Alyce Deterra; her grandchildren, Erika Nicole and Victor Carlon Joseph Deterra, Spencer James and Eric Edmund Hernandez, and Connor Joseph, Hunter James and Decker Rae Sims; her brother-in-law, Richard David Deterra; and her nephew Benjamin Spencer and wife Ann, and her many, many friends.

A special thank you to her kind caregivers, Suzi, Laura, Olga, Valeria, Grandview Home Health and Hospice El Paso.

Arrangements entrusted to Mt. Carmel Funeral Home. A gathering to celebrate her life will be held at a later date, after which Rachel will join her husband Joe at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery.
