SANDRA TOMKO Obituary

SANDRA TOMKO August 22, 1943 - February 23, 2018 After a brief illness Sandra Tomko age seventy four, passed away on February 23, at her home in San Antonio. Sandy attended Warren Ohio public schools. She met her husband Thomas A. Tomko in high school. The couple maintained their relationship and were married in January 1966 shortly after his return from Germany serving in the U.S. Army. The couple have three daughters, Sharon Tomko of San Antonio, Nicole Tomko Villegas of Laredo and Christine Tomko West of Austin. After high school graduation, Sandy was employed as a account manager for a local telephone company. In 1964 she was employed as a Executive Secretary for Packard Electric, a Division of General Motors. Her husband's career moved the family to El Paso Texas in 1984. She continued her domestic engineering duties and began higher education studies in El Paso, UTEP State college. In 1987 professional opportunity had the family moving to Laredo, Texas where she earned a Associate of Arts degree, and went on to earn her Bachelors degree, graduating Summa Cum Laude, majoring in English with a minor in Sociology from Texas AM. Sandy enjoyed children. She had a working knowledge of Mexican culture and language. She took the occasion to teach under-privileged children. In 1994 after another professional accomplishment, the couple moved back to their home town, Warren, Ohio. Then in 1996 opportunity struck again as they moved back to Texas. At this juncture Sandy briefly taught as a substitute teacher at San Antonio middle schools. After a successful career her husband retired in 2009 and the couple remained in San Antonio. Throughout her life Sandy had a positive impact with her children's development, and church and community involvement. She actively participated in civic, church, and academic programs in the towns the family lived. She was a past member of United Way, Beta Sigma Phi, Women's City Club, Junior League , BOD Philharmonic Orchestra, Sonterra Country Club, where she enjoyed the book club, bridge club, and social activities. When in town, Sandy was at yoga and pilates class, she was a avid Gold's club member. Local civic activity included Newcomers Club of San Antonio, SAMMinistry preparing and serving meals for the less fortunate, and a member of San Antonio Assistance League. She was a active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, various bible study groups and worked with The SHAWLS Ministry for sick and terminally ill parishioners. Sandy enjoyed travel with Family and Friends. They had traveled the world and had taken 42 cruises during their 52 years of marriage. She also enjoyed Culinary Arts, the theatre, movies novels, gardening, and bridge club. However, what she enjoyed most, was being with her Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Florian and Mary Frenchko Hatosky; her brother, Raymond Hatosky; her husband's parents, George and Mary Tomko; sister and brother-in-laws, Marlene Mrofchak, Gerald and Rita Kurdila, Michael Maggiano; and nephew, U.S. Marine Cpl. John Chickelli lll. She is survived by her husband, Tom; children, Sharon Tomko, Nicole Tomko Villegas and husband Ramon, Christine Tomko West and husband Justin; grandchildren, Camila Villegas, Tomas Andres Villegas, Enrique Ramon Villegas, Olivia West and James"Jay" West; her sister, Barbara Hatosky; brother, Robert "Bob" and wife Tina Hatosky; sister and brother-in-laws, Joanne Hatosky, George Tomko his wife Linda, John Mrofchak, Eleanor Maggiano; uncle, William "Bill" Frenchko; aunt, Helen (Ostas) Frenchko; as well as fifteen nieces and nephews.
