THOMAS LEE RILEY

Thomas Lee Riley, age 76, passed away at his home in Ely, MN on Friday, February 13, 2026. Tom was born on January 19, 1950, in Brainerd, MN to Margaret and Argus Riley. His life was a long and brilliant journey marked by service, courage, and meaningful contributions to his community and country. Tom proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a decorated veteran, having been awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. He began his teaching career in Grove City before eventually making his way to what he called "God's Country" in Ely. There, he taught at Vermilion Community College. Tom went on to fight wildfires across the United States with ChemAir Helicopters, a role that reflected both his bravery and his deep commitment to protecting others. He enjoyed working at Zaverl's in Ely, where he built lasting friendships and remained a familiar, welcoming presence in town. He is survived by his son, Donavon (Leann "Annie") Riley; grandchildren Owen (23), Alma (19), Hoshea (15), Hallel (13), and Gyda (8) of Northfield, MN and his son Patrick Riley of Brainerd; his sister, Randi Sue Kuschke of Nisswa; his niece, A'Lesha Kuschke; his nephew, Michael Riley Jr.; and niece Carmon Thelen. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two older brothers, Charles Riley and Michael Riley; his brother-in-law, Mark Kuschke; his nephew, Shaun Riley; his uncle and aunt, Charles and Dorothy Knedel. Tom will be remembered as a hero, an educator, a firefighter, a storyteller, and a kind, calm person and friend. A service will be planned for Spring 2026 in Brainerd.
