Jan Gilligan Obituary

Jan Marie Gilligan, 65, St. Louis, passed away Sunday, August 3, 2025 at her home.

Jan was born on August 27, 1959 to the late James and Irene (Gildehaus) McDermott in Washington. She attended St. Francis Borgia Grade and High School. She graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with honors, receiving her Bachelors of Nursing Degree in 1981. Following graduation, Jan was employed at St. Anthony's Hospital in South St. Louis. In 1982, she transferred to Barnes Hospital, where she worked on the orthopedic floor until 1987. She then worked as a nurse in the fields of Infection Control, and then Home Health until 1989.

Jan was an avid reader, she loved traveling, giving gifts with her personalized wrapping paper, playing sports, fishing, her plants and flowers, her dogs, playing games, floating, time spent at the family clubhouse and farm, and Cardinal baseball. She loved being a nurse, and her time spent with family and friends; especially her grandchildren.

Jan is preceded in death by her parents; her in laws, Patrick and Peggy (Ferguson) Gilligan; and brother-in-law, Fran Gilligan.

She is survived by her husband, Shawn; daughter, Maggie Gilligan; grandchildren, Makayla and Declan, all of St. Louis; her stepmother, Barbara LaPlant, Washington; brother, Joe, wife, Sarah (Kriete), Washington; sister, Joan Cooke, husband, Steve, St. Louis; her husband's family, Pat Gilligan, wife, Linda (Aho), Wildwood, Jim Gilligan, wife, Kim (Bryant), Sunset Hills, Mark Gilligan, wife, Pam (Ernst), Affton, Kathleen (Gilligan) Steinhart, husband, Russ, St. Louis, Ann (Gilligan) Hancock, husband, Rick, St. Louis, Michael Gilligan, wife, Jennifer (Watters), Malta; along with many nieces; nephews; and friends.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, September 20, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Pillar Church, St. Louis with a celebration of life to follow.

Internment at Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Stroke Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692, or you may contribute online at the American Heart Association website.

From nursing school to the 7300 group! Friends for a long time. I´ll never forget the girls HR at her house and a bat came out of the fireplace. We all dove under the dinning room table . She was sooo smart and fun too.
