Oliver James Bacott, 92, St. Louis, passed away peacefully in his home, Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020.

Oliver was born Jan. 18, 1927, in St. Louis, to Maurice "Leo" and Ruth (Caulley) Bacott, St. Louis.

He leaves behind his wife of 72 years, Harriett E (Mossberger) Bacott; eight children, Kathleen (Daniel) Kuennen, Salisbury Md., Bruce (Linda) Bacott, O'Fallon, Jill (Steven) Bauer, Hillsboro, Lee (Denise) Bacott, Eureka, Christina (Robert) Stergos, St. Louis, Karen (Randy) Weddington, Hillsboro, Brian (Tina) Bacott, Washington, and Rebecca (Darren) Gruen, Leasburg; 29 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Maurice "Moe" Bacott, O'Fallon; one sister, Patricia Murphy, Cedar Hill; nephews; nieces; many loved ones and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Oliver served on the Battleship Pennsylvania BB-38 during World War II. He wed the love of his life on May 1, 1948, raising a loving and honorable family. He worked until retirement for AT&T. Upon his retirement, he had a passion for all things in nature, and loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, raising homing pigeons, playing billiards and horseshoes. Oliver was an active member of Hillsboro Christian Church. He was a faithful follower of Jesus.

Oliver was buried with full military honors Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, for immediate family only.

A celebration of his life will be held at Hillsboro Christian Church, Saturday, Feb. 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. All are welcome to come honor his legacy.

Kathleen and I take this opportunity to offer our most sincere condolences to Olly's family members during this very difficult time.I had the honor and privilege of being able to call the "Olly Man" my dear friend going back as far as 1966 when we worked together at Western Electric at 4240 Duncan Avenue. I will always remember Olly being one of the first people to introduce himself and welcome me on my first day at the job. He immediately informed me with that wonderful wit of his that I found extremely entertaining that being in charge of the office supplies "Surely young man you do realize that you have enormous control over this entire operation". "These people around here are at your mercy because they have to depend on you for every pencil, piece of paper, stapler , paper clip, etc. that they require to even do their jobs so don't take any guff or hesitate to use that power". I have never forgotten the outstanding humorous times we shared over the years and his very thoughtful kind gesture on that very first day. I was just out of the Army in a world somewhat foreign to me. At that moment the "Olly-Man"really made me feel welcomed and so much more at ease in my new surroundings. Bless You Dear Friend! We will miss your dad so much! Aunt Harriett and Uncle Pert have been like grandparents to me, but also friends and teachers. I know we will see him again and I look forward to that reunion. I feel so blessed to have such wonderful role models in my life, and also in my sons' lives.

So many beautiful memories flood my mind, and I am reminded of all of the wisdom dad so often gave in casual conversations. He didn't force his opinion on people, but he planted the seeds of wisdom that would sprout and grow in Gods perfect timing.
I hold his words in my head, and heart...his life was a testament to kindness in every interaction with the lives he encountered; from baby birds, to his adoration of our mom, his children, his childrens children, to the seemingly undesirable types of humans who had lost their way, and every type of living creature he came across, he showed the natureof Jesus. He was loving, kind, firm but gentle, generous and wise, humorous, and inspiring.
His love was an action, his nurturing so tender.
I know his spirit resides in me, as much as his blood flows through my viens. I know he was proud of me and my family, because he told me so often. I'm so very grateful to have had my fifty years of life supported and encouraged by such a loving, respectable, & realistic father.
There are many people who have been touched by his life. People who learned they were acceptable because of his influence on their self esteem, because they mattered to him, and he showed them respect and unconditional love. I'm beyond thankful that God allowed me to be his babygirl.

I'll always think of my godfather when I gather in prayer with others. He, my mom and I were praying for grandma Ruth at the nursing home before she passed away. Uncle Pert quoted Matthew 18:20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." The Lord was at Jefferson Barracks yesterday, when about 100 people who truly loved this godly man gathered in prayer. Uncle Pert was a very handsome man with crystal blue eyes, and a wonderful sense of humor. Going to visit his family was a very special treat for me and my siblings. We loved his home and family. We 6 kids were always welcome to spend time with his 8 kids. Uncle Pert had a great wife, Aunt Harriet and together they raised 8 good kids, some grandkids and probably a bonus kid or two. Everyone was welcome in his God loving Christian home. May your spirit soar among the angels and loved ones who entered heaven before you. Watch over the people you left to carry on your faithful journey.

I for one, will miss his sweet greeting when I walked through his door, among so many other things. His humor; his comments and compliments of people close to me; his genuine concern and interest in the lives of his loved ones. The beauty of nature around me will bring heart-ache, but also healing, because he taught us to value all of creation's intricacies and wonder. Everything old (especially books) and nostalgic will bring him to mind. He had an interest and appreciation of their value and history. Mostly, I'll just miss being with him. There's no other that will ever be "my dad". I couldn't have asked God for a more precious dad and friend. I'm thankful for an eventual eternity with him.
