Wilma M. Niewald

1924 - 2023

Wilma M. Niewald, nee Walkenhorst, 99, New Haven, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2023, at New Haven Care Center, New Haven.

Wilma was born Jan. 1, 1924, in New Haven, daughter of the late Otto Walkenhorst and wife Martha, nee Sievers. She was united in marriage to Carl Oberdieck, Oct. 10, 1942, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Port Hudson. Carl preceded her in death, June 12, 1983. She later married Martin W. Niewald, April 9, 1988, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Haven. Martin preceded her in death, Sept. 27, 2015.

Wilma was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Haven, where she also was a member of the Ladies Aid. She worked for American Recreation Products for many years where she held various positions, but lastly she was drawing plans for tents. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening, and she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Wilma is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Scheer and husband Larry, New Haven, Linda Kaskadden and husband Kenneth, Hermann, and Katherine Weiser and husband Tim, Rosebud; a son, Dennis Oberdieck, Weldon Spring; stepdaughter, Dottie Niewald, Lexington, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren and spouses; three step-granddaughters and spouses; 18 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Carl Oberdieck; her second husband, Martin Niewald; daughter-in-law, Joyce Oberdieck; sister, Elda Vohs; and brother, Harold Walkenhorst

Visitation will be held Saturday, May 6, from 9-11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Haven, with a funeral service following at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or New Haven Care Center.
