Chief Warrant Officer 4 (Retired) William L. "Willie" Ruf, 84, passed away Sept. 20, 2007, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Ala.

Ruf was born Feb. 16, 1923, at Monmouth, N.J. to Sgt. Maj. William Ruf Sr. and Mrs. Katherine Garthwaite Ruf. He enlisted in the Army at age eighteen and served in the infantry in WW II where he was captured, but escaped to rejoin the war.

In 1955, he graduated with the first Helicopter Pilot Class at Fort Rucker, Ala., and later saw action as a pilot in the Korean War, the Lebanon crisis, and the Vietnam conflict. In 1959 he became a member of the Army Executive Flight Detachment (Presidential Flight), serving as the helicopter pilot for Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy. Later he served as an instructor pilot at Fort Rucker for five years accumulating 16000 total flying hours, 1200 in combat.

After 26 years of service, he retired from the Army in 1967 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4, having earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, and Air Medal for Valor.

Following his retirement from the Service, he became a civilian flight instructor until his final retirement. During his retirement years he remained active as a Red Cross volunteer at the Fort Rucker hospital, a tour guide at the Fort Rucker Army Aviation Museum, and a popular guest speaker at helicopter flight training graduations and other ceremonies at the post.

Ruf was a graduate of Troy University, and was an active and supportive member of the Troy State Alumni Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 50 years, Grace Madeline Ireland Ruf. He is survived by his wife Kim Ruf of Daleville, Ala., a son William L. (Billy) Ruf, III of Enterprise, a daughter Teresa Ann, and her husband Dr. Raymond Crawford, III of Clifton, Va., and their children Kimberly (Mrs. Ian Buxton), Jennifer, and 1 Lt. Brian Crawford. Other survivors include a step-daughter, Natalie, a brother George and wife Jean Ruf of Florida, a sister Louise and husband Nicholas DiDia of New Jersey, and a brother Norman and wife Raymanda of Illinois.

Willie was a great friend and mentor to thousands, as well as a great Soldier. He'll have left a lasting mark on the Army and particularly Army Aviation. That fact should be a source of pride and consolation to you, his family, and to his many, many friends.

Enterprise and Fort Rucker have lost a favorite son with the passing of this great individual. In the many years that I knew and worked with Willie, there was never an unfriendly moment or unkind word from him. It is with much pride that I join the ranks of so many others who were honored to call him a friend.

I was very saddened to hear of my OLE PAL Willie's passing and I just want you know how schocked and how sorry I am to hear it.
No expression of sympathy--no matter how deeply felt--can help much right now, but I had to let you know that my thoughts are with you.
Willie and I refereed many high school football games and many, many high school and college basketball games together and he was always respected by the coaches, players and fans for his high ethical standards and his professionalism. He would always chuckle when I used to kid him about his age and that I was going to buy him a wheel chair so that I could drag him up and down the court much easier.
We have lost a GREAT WARRIER! Safe Flight!

It is with certainty that our Willie is still flying, smiling and being sincere with all who knew him--whether for a long or short time.

This world needs more men of his character, dedication and personality!

It was an honor to know and serve with you, Good Willie!!! I'm sure you are resting in eternal sleep, so well earned and deserved.

Condolences to your family!
