Agnes Wilson Obituary

Agnes Jackson Wilson, age 95, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2021, in Erie, Pa.

She was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Reverend James Renwick Jackson and Agnes McMullen Jackson McCallum.

She graduated from Tyrone High School in 1942 and Westminster College in 1945, completing her degree in three years. She received a full academic scholarship and graduated with highest distinction. She was inducted into the Pi Delta Epsilon Honorary Collegiate Journalism fraternity.

In 1948, she married John "Jack" Howard Wilson and raised four children. She taught in the Erie School District for 46 years. She exemplified the saying, "If you love your job, you will never work a day in your life." Agnes made the work of science an exciting place for her students. She was known to charm even the most reluctant student because of her sincere concern about each student's success. In 1989, she was named Roosevelt Middle School Teacher of the Year, the District teachers voted her District Middle School Teacher of the Year and she received an "Educator of the Year" award from the state. A former student nominated her for inclusion in the first edition of Who's Who Among American Teachers. Following retirement, she volunteered with the Hamot Aid Society and served as President for several years. Agnes enjoyed playing golf, cooking for her family, and vacations at Avalon, New Jersey. The shore was a place of renewal. Football weekends at the "Big House" in Ann Arbor, Michigan cheering for the Wolverines, were also special.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her beloved son, Dr. John H. Wilson Jr.; and her brother, Dr. James Renwick Jackson, Jr.

Agnes is survived by three daughters, Janet Wilson, Cyndy Marks and husband, Brady, Dr. Sally Ashton-Hay and husband, Doug; a granddaughter, Erin Marks Blashock; a brother, Walter Jackson and wife, Priscilla; sisters-in-law, Betty Jackson and Janet Cason; as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Bickford as well as the hospice nurse, Mary.

Per Agnes' wishes the service will be private with arrangements entrusted to Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc. Downtown, 602 W. 10th St., Erie, PA 16502.

Memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 250 W. 7th St., Erie, PA 16501, in care of The Benjamin Musso Memorial Carillon Fund.

I knew Agnes through my association with her son, John Howard Wilson when we met in Oxford in 2003 at the Centenary of Evelyn Waugh. She was a remarkable, one might say indefatigable lady who kept up with the gathering of Waugh scholars as they visited the sites at which the author had stayed and lived, including his home in Combe Flory and his college at Oxford. These travels could be arduous at times but she never faltered or hesitated to keep up with the younger people. She was an inspiration to us all, and especially so for her son John. God rest her soul. George McCartney

So sorry to hear of Mrs. Wilson's passing. She was my science teacher at Roosevelt Jr. High School. She was my favorite teacher, so enthusiastic! My condolences to her family.

Janet, Even though your mom was my homeroom teacher over 50 years ago, I will always remember her. She was the most sincerely caring teacher I ever knew. My sympathy to you and your family.

The photo is perfect. Agnes was a woman of great can-do energy, which she brought to everything, from raising her kids, to raising the neighbors' kids too. She looked out for us all. Thank you Agnes, for being a great neighbor.

To the family of Mrs. Wilson,
I will never forget your mom as my science teacher at Roosevelt. She had such a glow about her when she taught. Your mom was an inspiration to everyone of her students. She will be one of God's beautiful flowering angels now. My prayers are with the family.

Janet,
I can’t put into words my feelings of affection and admiration I had for your mom. Tears come flowing to my eyes. She was an outstanding lady and teacher, a dear friend and colleague. I loved Agnes and will keep her in my prayers.
