Herbert Stanley Ascherman

Beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Herbert Stanley Ascherman, died on April 14th, 2010 at the age of 85 while surrounded by family. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Mr. Ascherman attended Shaker Heights High School before obtaining undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard University. Mr. Ascherman subsequently established American Hardwood Industries, a company that he led for over 30 years before relocating from Erie, Pa. to Potomac, Md. Mr. Ascherman championed a number of philanthropic, social, and cultural causes, most notably United Jewish Appeal, United Way, and the International United Way where he served as Chairman of the Board. He was also the Chairman of the Board of Mercyhurst College. To promote economics and social justice, Mr. Ascherman created the Herbert S. and Dorothy R. Ascherman Endowed Chair of Economics at Harvard University in 1981. These activities reflect a life devoted to family and the general well being of others. Mr. Ascherman is survived by his wife, Dorothy Rose Ascherman, as well as his sister, six children, 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Star of David Memorial Park, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at 1 p.m. on April 18th, 2010.
