Martin Carroll Obituary

Martin J. Carroll, age 78, of Erie, passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2021.

He was born in Erie, on June 26, 1942, a son of the late Thomas and Alice Walsh Carroll.

Marty graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School in 1960 then joined the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS Helena and the USS Fechteler in the Western Pacific from 1960-1964. He worked briefly at American Sterilizer before joining the Pennsylvania State Police in 1966, where he was active in youth services and helped run Camp Cadet for many years. He retired from the State Police in 1981 and started work at St. Vincent Hospital as the Director of Security for 15 years. After leaving St. Vincent, he was a safety consultant at Insurance Management Company where he worked until his retirement. He dedicated his time to Erie Youth Hockey as coach, general manager, board member, and President for ten years. He was a football referee who helped run official's organizations in many capacities from Little Gridders to the collegiate level. He was active in the Erie Irish Cultural Society and Rince na Tiarna Irish dancing, and was a proud member and lifelong participant in Erie Times Old Newsies. He, along with his wife Denise, was one of the founders of the Down Syndrome Support Group of Erie and opened their home to numerous foster children and a foreign exchange student. A proud graduate of Erie Clown College and fluent speaker of Blarney, Marty the Party served as the 1st and only Mayor of Molly Brannigans. His hobbies included woodworking, captaining The Seven C's, long rides around town with his daughter Erin, and—up until the day he passed—cooking for a small army. He displayed a strong love of family, pride and pleasure in his Irish heritage, faithfulness in enduring friendships, and a firm devotion to the memory of his beloved Denise.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Denise R. Winkelbauer Carroll in 2000 and a brother, Thomas Carroll.

Survivors include his seven proudest accomplishments, Dr. Sean Carroll and his wife Bernadette, Michelle Carroll, Colleen Shaw and her husband Bob, Timothy Carroll and his wife Keri, and Erin Carroll, all of Erie, Megan Archer and her wife VeAna of Gulf Breeze, Florida and Dr. Rory Carroll and his wife Abby of Magnolia, Arkansas, a sister, Shaleen Liebel and her husband Mike, 15 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Dear Carroll Family
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I went to School with Erin, served Mass with Tim a few times and attended the Welcome retreat with Sean.
I got the opportunity of talking with your father and Erin at St. Jude's a few years back after Church and one evening a few summers ago at Imperial. I will keep your family in my prayers.

My condolences to the family of Mr. Carroll! Reading his obituary/legacy those of us who didn't have the pleasure of knowing him can tell that this was a remarkable man. I don't know all of his children, but if they are anything like their brother Tim, then this man raised some very incredible children. Home to your reward now Mr. Carroll, to the mansion that has been prepared for you.

Mr. and Mrs. Carroll were the embodiment of Irish hospitality and good cheer to the innumerable ragamuffin friends of their kids growing up, always offering visitors abundant food, drink, and fun at their pool. Mr. Carroll could bring the house to order quickly with a bellow, but preferred to smilingly watch the controlled chaos of his kids at play with others.

May the peace of Christ console your family in this difficult time, and may you come to feel an abiding joy that your Dad and Mom are together again.
