Richard Travers Obituary

Loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather

Richard C. "Dick" Travers, age 74, of Millcreek, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, March 22, 2021. Born on September 5, 1946, in Erie, he was a son of the late Joseph and Shirley (Webster) Travers.

Dick graduated from Strong Vincent High School and had worked at Howard Johnson's and then as the property manager for the YMCA for many years until his retirement. He also worked with his father at Travers & Son Heating and Cooling, a side business he continued to operate throughout his life.

Dick was passionate about music and played the drums in several local bands including the "Cordials," "The Midnight Express," "Grayhounds," and "Single Barrel." He met his wife of 56 years, Susanne, as she sang for the "Brendells" and he was the drummer for the "Cordials." He strived to be the best at everything he did and that included the Tour Director for "Roar on the Shore," past president of the Tamarack Turkey Talkers of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and a board member for Erie County Fallen Riders Memorial Fund.

Dick had an unending love for his family and would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Dick was an avid sportsman who loved fishing and hunting, especially calling in turkeys with his friend Scott. He was also a Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast riding in dozens of community charity rides raising money for those in need.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother and father in-law, William and Violet Wrixton; a brother-in-law, Carl Russell and a nephew, Jeffrey Russell.

Survivors include his wife, Susanne (Wrixton) Travers; his children Joseph "Joey" Travers and Lauren Travers; two grandchildren, Abigail Travers and Chelsea Duke; an expectant great-grandson in September, Oliver Richard Pratt; two sisters, Joyce Russell and Sherri Hodge (Pastor Jim); a brother, Gary Travers (Jeffrey Lightner); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th St., at Greengarden Blvd. Services will be held there on Saturday at 11 a.m. officiated by his brother-in-law, Pastor Jim Hodge of the Harborcreek Community Church where Dick attended. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Erie County Fallen Riders Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 9444, Erie, PA 16505. Condolences may be expressed at www.bruggerfuneralhomes.com.

Sue, Joey and Lauren,
Our deepest and heartfelt condolences on Dicks “sunset” in this earthly life, but celebrating his “sunrise” in Heaven! He sure was a “make a difference” person and was one of those guys that just made you feel better being in his presence. He could “light up any room” and the room “was always brighter” when he was in it!
Great early memories of him at Ho Jo’s where he could fix / install anything which continued to be a gift he had all his life whenever he was called upon. Dick was instrumental (following Sue’s initial introduction) in playing matchmaker for my beautiful wife Sandy of 37 years and he would always remind me of that which always made us both smile.
Dick’s character and integrity were always forefront and he was one of the most selfless individuals we knew as he shined for Jesus with his beautiful Fruit of the Spirit qualities. *He was such a good person and a gift to the world! He will be missed!!
Sincerely,
Doug and Sandy Nelson

I loved Dick. I met Dick through my Uncle Dan Bertges. They have been friends since the mid sixties. Dan Bertges had sold Dick first car when we was a car salesman at Dailey's Chevrolet in the 1960's. Dick had fixed, repaired, replaced so many hot water tanks, furnaces or air conditioners for me. I would see Dick all the time. And he would just come by business to tell me a joke. Which we all really enjoyed. I do not think I ever saw him in a bad mood. He was always happy and very much enjoyed life, and his especially.

I am deeply saddened and my heart grieves with you Sue and all of Dick's family during this time of grief. Dick was a good and kind person who loved making people laugh and he was sure to be the life of the party. Dick lived his life to the fullest and he gave so much in helping others no matter what someone needed. Indeed he was a lover of people and a blessing to so many including myself. Dick made this world a better place, a beautiful place and will be dearly missed. His was a life well-lived. I am lifting all of Dick's family and friends in prayer. May your memories bring comfort and peace and may Dick now rest in the arms of our loving God. Farewell my friend!
