Georgie Haynes Obituary

Georgie "Georgia" Lee Poore Haynes

December 25, 1946 -

October 3, 2025

I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me on that day. 2 Timothy 4: 7-8

Georgie "Georgia" Lee Poore Haynes, age 78, entered the portals of heaven on October 3, 2025, at the Center on Aging after a brief illness. She was born on Christmas morning in 1946 to her parents, Hiram and Margie Poore of Jonesborough.

She was a founding member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church, where she enjoyed attending services and worshipping with her friends and neighbors.

Other than her parents, Georgia is preceded in death by her husband of 55 1/2 years, Dorsie Jack, in 2020. As well as several aunts and uncles and her dear friend of many years, Nan Foster.

Left behind to cherish her memories are her children, son, Nathan (Susan) Haynes of Telford, daughter, Sarah Haynes of Limestone. Her two precious grandchildren, Kati Garst and Kaden Haynes and her best friend, Norma Street and faithful dog, Izzy. She is also survived by her brother Tilman (Sue) Poore, sisters Nettie Jean (Danny) Beckett and Ruby (Dale) McCurry, brother-in-law, Robert "Tex" (Carolyn) Haynes, sister-in-law, Lorraine Ollis, several nieces and nephews.

Georgia retired from the Unicoi County School System in 2014, after 30+ years of service, where she held several positions with her last being the secretary for Love Chapel Elementary. She selflessly retired to become the caregiver for her husband, Jack, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. She loved her job and always had a passion for children and seeing them grow and succeed. Many times, she would see her past students around town. She would light up when they recognized her and would fill her in on their lives. We always joked about her being the famous "Mrs. Haynes".

In her younger years, Georgia worked at Industrial Garment, in Erwin. She loved to talk about the people she worked with and all the friends that she made there. She never forgot a name. She would always tell you the person's name and then share a memory about them. It was very apparent that these people meant so much to her and she cherished their friendships even though it might have been 50 years ago.

During her retirement, Georgia enjoyed feeding and watching the wildlife around her house. She knew exactly when the hummingbirds would arrive for the season and always had their feeders ready to go. She knew every deer that wandered through the yard and kept up with them year after year. You could hear the excitement in her voice when she called to tell you that she got to see the babies. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Talking on the phone, attending Kaden's ballgames to cheer him on, eating countless dinners with Norma and thoroughly enjoying the simple things in life.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you her dear friend and neighbor Roy Lacey and to all her school and church friends that brought meals, helped out and spent time with her during her illness and a special thanks to the staff and nurses at the Center on Aging, as well as the Amedisys Hospice nurses and staff for the short time she was there.

The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 PM Tuesday, October 7. 2025, at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at Maple Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Roger Laws and Pastor Kevin Laws officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
