John C. Tanger, III
Hanover
John C. "Jack" Tanger III, 86, died Thursday, January 7, 2016, at his residence at Homewood at Plum Creek Retirement Community in Hanover. His wife, Barbara L. Tanger, died October 15, 2011. They were married 59 years.
Born November 10, 1929, in Hanover, he was the son of the late John C. Tanger Jr. and Elizabeth (Allewelt) Tanger.
Surviving are children, Susan J. Tanger and her companion, Kevin Hunter of Sykesville, Md., John C. Tanger, IV and his companion, Mary Bliss of Yorba Linda, Calif. and David L. Tanger and his wife, Lori of Hanover; step granddaughter, Abby Groft of Lancaster; and brother-in-law, Jack LeFevre of Hanover. He was predeceased by a sister, Betty Jane Tanger, in 1925.
Mr. Tanger followed his grandfather and father as owner of J.C. Tanger Hardware off Center Square in Hanover until 1986 and Tanger's Warehouse on High Street until 2008.
Mr. Tanger graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1948 and with the Class of 1952 from Amherst College. At Mercersburg, he excelled in track, running on the gold medal winning 440 team in the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
Barb and Jack traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad.
He was a member of the board of directors of Peoples Bank of Hanover and its successor banks.
He was well-versed in his family genealogy and the history of his hometown.
There will be no service. Inurnment for Barb and Jack will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Memorials may be made to the Hanover Public Library.

I believe that John C. "Jack" Tanger III may be my grandmother's (who was my father's adoptive mother, Louise Tanger Kilgore) nephew. Was very happy to find this page and make that possible connection :-)
