Richard Michael Obituary

NEW OXFORD Richard Calvin Michael, 85, of Cross Keys Village, passed away unexpectedly while vacationing in Maine. Born October 19, 1926, in Frederick, MD., he was a son of the late Grover Lee Michael and Catherine Rowe Michael. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Ditty Michael, who died in 1994, his second wife, Jane Grasmick Michael, who died in 2002, and a brother, Grover L. Michael, Jr. He was a member of Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. Mr. Michael was a 1943 graduate of Frederick High School and in 1948, received his bachelor of science degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Engineering.He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1945-46 and was a former employee of McConway & Torley, LLC in Pittsburgh. In 1960, he moved to Hanover and purchased Penn-Mar Foundry. He served as Vice President of the Hanover Public School District Board and served on the Boards of Directors for The Brethren Home Community Foundation, the York-Adams Mental Health Program, and the Adams County Community Foundation. He established several reading programs at the Guthrie Memorial Library. A Past President and longtime member of the Rotary Club of Hanover, he was a Paul Harris Fellow recipient, and also served as a Past President of the York Chapter of the International Wine & Food Society. He was a member of the Arcadian Social Club of Hanover, Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, Hanover Historical Society, and was a 50 year member of the Hanover Country Club. He enjoyed reading, playing golf, traveling, especially to the Outer Banks of NC, and following the Baltimore Orioles. Survivors include his daughter, Kammie Michael of Durham, N.C.; a son, Richard D. Michael and his wife, Jennifer, of Lemoyne; three month old triplet grandsons, William, Nicholas and Alexander Michael; two sisters, Linda Dutrow of Downers Grove, Ill., and Nancy Wachter of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Kitty Updike of Tega Cay, S.C., and Sharon Michael of Mona, Utah; two step-sons, James W. Grasmick and his wife, Aretta, of New Smyrna, Fla., and their children, James and Michelle, and Christopher B. Grasmick and his wife, Lynn, of Gettysburg and their children, Kimberly, Stephanie and Connor; and two step-daughters, Susan G. Guinn and her husband, Frederick, of Hanover, and Linda L. Grasmick of Norfolk, Va. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Nicarry Meetinghouse at Cross Keys Village, The Brethren Home Community with The Rev. Merv Wunderlich officiating. The family will receive friends following the service to celebrate Mr. Michael's life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Brethren Home Community Foundation, 2990 Carlisle Pike, New Oxford, PA 17350, or to the Guthrie Memorial Library, 2 Library Place, Hanover, PA 17331; or to the Adams County Community Foundation, P. My father and Dick were good friends and I enjoyed playing golf with them on occasion. I was sorry to learn of his passing. He made great contributions in the Hanover area.
