Steve Sheely Obituary

Steve E. 'Hook' Sheely, 51, joined his heavenly Fathers' eternal softball Hall of Fame Tuesday, February 21, 2006, at his home surrounded by his loving family and dog, Maggie. He is survived by Joanne (Redding) Sheely, his wife of 30 years; daughters, Jennifer Sheely of Baltimore, Md., Jessica (Sheely) Nguyen and son-in-law, Michael of McSherrystown; father, Harold Sheely and his wife, Betty of Hanover; mother, Delores Sheely of Hanover; grandmother, Ruth Wintrode of Hanover; brothers and sisters, Deb Sheely and companion, Blane Kuhn, Harold Sheely, Dale Sheely and his wife, Terri, Sherry Sheely, Robin Wonder and husband, Bob, and Rory Laughman and wife, Chantelle; and several nieces and nephews. A 1972 graduate of South Western High School, Mr. Sheely was employed by Swam Electric for the past 16 years as an electrician. Steve loved the game of softball. During the spring, summer and fall months he would spend his evenings, and sometimes weekends, playing softball at local and out of town fields. He shared his talents and knowledge of the game with 15 to 20 different teams in the Hanover Area Softball leagues. He will be remembered for his sportsmanship during play of the game and his ability to turn a running double play from the shortstop to 2nd to 1st bases. That was how he got the nickname "Hook". Friends may remember him during visits at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover, on Thursday, from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, with Father Joseph F. Gotwalt, officiating. Hook will be laid to rest in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover. Serving as casketbearers will be Rory Laughman, Matt Albright, Justin Sheely, Brian Gruver, Bob Myers, and Vince Redding. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Steve's name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 924-N Colonial Ave., York, PA 17403; or The Hope Lodge of Hershey, 125 Lucy Ave., Hummelstown, PA 17036.

To the Sheely Family - My prayers are with you during this trying time. Our families spent many days on the same softball fields and I will always remember that. I had the honor to know Hook on and off the field as a team player, coach & a softball Dad when he wasn't playing himself! I'm going to miss you Hook!

Sherry and the Sheely family,

I am so sorry for your loss, but have comfort in knowing he is with God now. I did not realize that I had met Steve more than one over the last few years. I was scoring at a one pitch tournament this past summer and he picked on me all day. I will always remember how much fun I had that day and how much I laughed because of Steve. Your family is in my thougths and prayers.

As a co-worker with Hook, I will above all remember him for his ability to be friends with everybody. It always appeared that no matter which work site we were at, workers from all trades knew him as a friend. This was a trait of his that I admired a great deal. I'll also remember his various comments and antics at work that helped to keep me amused. Steve was truly a special person who will undoubtedly be missed by many.

Even though the Sheely family has never met me, I met Steve through the stories that my friend Garry has told me. They were always funny and full of good hearted spirit. Steve you may now rest in peace and may you find comfort in God's loving arms.

Steve was my best friend growing up on Baltimore St. I'll never forget all the fun things we did, like our wiffle ball field at Forest Park and our little huts we built and of course the Chef-Boy-R-D pizzas. The Sheely family was always nice to me and i'm sure they will get through this tough time. Steve you will be missed.
