Back in 79 I had the great privilege of working under Master Woodcarver Jim Lohman, then of Boston, and upon my drooling over the pictured piece, he casually gave it to me. He had carved it "before the bloom wilted" as a quickie exercise. I spent a dozen or so hours making a copy.
I have just now read of his passing and am so saddened by the news. Jim was so talented and giving and shared so much with me, including making me, unrequested, a complete set of carving gouges. My job transfer separated us, and when I returned to Boston he had moved away, but I had hoped to continue our friendship.
I am honored to have known and spent some time with him and he is missed.

Ruskin Quote Tribune Tower Lobby Floor
Kurt Wolbrink
June 20, 2019
I had the distinct privilege of working with Jim these past seven years and was aware of his carving work in the Tribune Tower lobby. One day, when I happened to be in Chicago, I was able to walk into the lobby to view his work first hand. It was, of course, absolutely beautiful, but something else inset prominently into the lobby floor also caught my attention. It was a quote from John Ruskin's The Seven Lamps of Architecture. (photo attached)
I went home and found the fuller context of the quote:
Every human action gains in honor, in grace, in all true magnificence, by its regard to things that are to come. It is the far sight, the quiet and confident patience, that, above all other attributes, separate man from man, and near him to his Maker; and there is no action nor art, whose majesty we may not measure by this test. Therefore, when we build, let us think that we build for ever. Let it not be for present delight, nor for present use alone; let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for, and let us think, as we lay stone on stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, See! this our fathers did for us."
In my view, Jim's commitment to his art met every measure of Ruskin's standard and his resulting works will be held sacred in the test of time. He was the truest craftsman I have ever met and his passing is a great loss to all who can understand and appreciate such work.
Above all, he was my friend and I miss him.
My sincerest condolences to his family...
