John Weis Obituary

John Haynes Weis, husband, father, son, brother, mentor, educator and outdoor advocate, passed away at home on December 11th from glioblastoma.
John was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on April 11, 1955 to Robert E. Weis and Adrienne H. Weis. He attended public schools there and graduated from Bartlesville High School in 1973. He was a Boy Scout in the Cherokee Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and earned his God and Country Award concurrently. He enjoyed his summertime treks in the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.
He attended the University of Oklahoma and later Oregon State University, Corvallis, where he graduated with a BS degree. During the summers he worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Idaho as a forest fire spotter.
He received a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Minnesota, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School. John was married to Janis J. Weis, and they have twin daughters, Julie and Allison. John was extremely proud of the academic and personal accomplishments of his daughters; Julie as a medical student, scientist and Outward Bound instructor with a Master's in Public Health, and Allison as a PhD candidate in Microbiology, scientist and teacher who has spent time volunteering in Latin America.
John spent 27 years in academics as a Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah. His research was devoted to the study of fundamental principles of immunology to both graduate and medical students.
John's passions included fly fishing and photography, and he was never happier than when continuing these talents while casting for bonefish in the Caribbean. He doted on his wife and children, and encouraged all to strive for excellence and enjoyment in all pursuits. Many of the family's best times were spent exploring the Utah desert, Wyoming Wilderness and Pacific Northwest. He was a master of good will and humorous statements, and will be missed by family, fishing buddies, students, colleagues, and dear friends.
John is survived by his wife and soul mate of 37 years, Janis Weis, with whom he shared graduate, postdoctoral and faculty experiences, his daughters, Julie and Allison Weis, mother Adrienne Weis, brothers Robert (Janice) Weis and Lawrence Weis, sister Anita (James) Mapes. He was preceded in death by his father Robert Weis.
A celebration of life will be held January 23rd at a location to be determined. In lieu of flowers. the family suggests donations to Reel Recovery, Na'atik Language and Cultural Institute, or the Utah Chapter of the Lupus Foundation

It has been my privilege and honor to know and be a colleague of John and Janis at the University of Utah. John was always so happy and upbeat. In discussions about science or anything outdoors, John was atop of it. He has done so much for the community, in addition to his many contributions to the advancement of science.

I will miss his editorials in the SLTribune. Kudos to you, John, for making your voice be heard on so many important issues.

Heartfelt wishes to Janis and their family. No words can ever do justice.

The American Association of Immunologists extends its most sincere condolences to John's family and colleagues. We are deeply saddened by this news. John had been a dedicated member of AAI since 1987 attending annual meetings and serving as an associate editor for The JI. In addition to his passion for immunology and success as a researcher, he was clearly a man of many talents and dimensions. May his brave spirit sustain you through these difficult days.

Sincerely,
Michele Hogan
Executive Director, AAI

I didn't know John as an adult which, to read his obituary, was my loss. John and I grew up as next door neighbors in Bartlesville in the 60's and early 70's. Along with his brother Robbie and several childhood friends we spent many hours playing games and goofing off. By high school it was evident that John, who was a year younger, had a great intellect. I'm glad he was able to use that intellect and create a wonderful life for himself and others.
Peace,
Phil

John was my PhD mentor from 1987-1990, as well as friend. My husband Steve and I moved out to Salt Lake City with the Weis family from Boston in 1989 to help set up the lab and continue my thesis research. I will never forget the kindness John and Janis showed us in making the transition from Boston, not to mention all the science and life lessons he taught me working in his lab. He will be greatly missed. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

I've had the honor of knowing John for these last four years where he was instrumental in recruiting Ryan and I to Utah. He spent a lot of his time reading and critiquing my grants. I still have his many handwritten notes. I admired how he was so passionate about science, his family and fishing!!! He has made a lasting impression on me and will never be forgotten.

We met and chatted with John and Janis at various sporting events with our daughters. His widely varied background, diverse interests and easy going way made him easy to hang out with. Our thoughts and prayers are with Janis, Julie, Ali and the family.
