Vernon Myrick Obituary

Family and friends of Vernon Myrick, age 94, are mourning his death on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at this home in Bartlesville, with his family beside him. The community has lost one of its kindest hearts, a man who dearly loved his friends and family. Vernon also greatly enjoyed literature, classical music and opera, playing golf, and his succession of wonderful dogs.
Mr. Myrick is survived by his cousins, Martha Talmage and Judy Talmage Cotter, her husband, Joe Cotter, and other extended family members, as well as friends, Roane Fowler, Marletta Walker, and Sandy and Charlie Lee, and others who all appreciated his sincere friendship.
Vernon Talmage Myrick was born on September 25, 1922, in Black Dog Township, Osage County, Oklahoma, the only child of Joel Harrison Myrick and Ethel Faye Talmage Myrick.
Vernon Myrick lived in Jenks, Oklahoma, and in 1928, the family moved to Tulsa where Vernon attended school and graduated from Central High School in 1940. He served in the 402nd Service Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII in California, Alaska, and Canada. Following his service, he graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1949.
Mr. Myrick was a CPA and partner in the Tulsa accounting firm of Daniel, Daniel and Ennis. The firm was joined by many other firms over the years and at the time of his retirement it was KPMG Peat Marwick. During his lengthy career, he provided auditing, tax and planning services for many major companies across America, including for St. John's Hospital in Tulsa, where he enjoyed working with the nuns that ran the hospital.
Vernon was a long-time member and daily golfer at Tulsa Country Club.
Vernon retired from his work at KPMG to provide loving care for his widowed mother during her lengthy illness. He also worked part-time managing business affairs for Ed Lawson (Lawson Petroleum Company). Following his mother's death in 1998, Vernon moved from Tulsa to Bartlesville and purchased a home near his cousin, Martha Talmage. In Bartlesville he enjoyed a new circle of friends who gather daily for coffee and conversation. He also worked out 3-6 times weekly in the Wellness Center at Jane Phillips Medical Center, where he also had many friends. He was still enjoying his coffee gatherings and time at the gym until the day he died.
In 2014, Mr. Myrick suffered an illness that left his unable to live alone. The family thanks Visiting Angels, Kay Ivey and Lorice Birch, for the tender care that they provided.
Services for Mr. Myrick will be Thursday, January 26, at 11:00 AM at Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home, 710 S. Dewey Ave., Bartlesville. A graveside service will be held following that service at 2:00 PM at Rose Hill Cemetery, 4161 E. Admiral Place, Tulsa.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.honoringmemories.com.
