Edward Voytek Obituary

Edward Louis "Ed" Voytek, 80, passed away January 16, 2016.

A visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon, with a memorial service to follow at noon, both at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 3736 S. Lee's Summit Road, Independence, Mo.

Ed was born on April 4, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio, to John and Helen (Szumal) Voytek. He graduated from Cathedral Latin High School and went on to play football at Purdue University. He joined on with the Washington Redskins and played professionally as a guard in 1957 and 1958. He went back to Purdue and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1962. In 1963, he resumed football in spring training, but was injured. It was then that he began a partnership veterinary practice in Lafayette, Indiana. He later moved to Cicero, Illinois, and operated his own animal hospital, retiring from there after 20 years. He spent his retirement traveling, and vacationed in Costa Rica and Long Boat Key, Florida. His love of animals never faded, and he would often sit in his porch chair, watch the wildlife, and enjoy nature. He loved people as well – he never knew a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone he met. Ed's smile, character, and heart of gold will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his sister, Loretta Marron and her husband, Jim; niece, Sandra Marron and her daughter, Lauren Byrne; nephew, James Marron, his wife, Jessica, and their two children, Andrew and Matt; and nephew, Mark Marron, his wife, Mary, and their children, Michael and Bryn. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In honor of Ed's love of animals, the family suggests contributions may be made to Wayside Waifs.

Eddie was a good friend. I really enjoyed his company...he was "one-of -kind." Old school guy. I will really miss him.
