Shirley F. Brooks
July 11, 1945 - March 22, 2026
Shirley Funkhouser Brooks, a lifelong resident of Fauquier County and a devoted servant of her community, was called home by God on March 22, 2026. Born on July 11, 1945, to the late Cecil and Sylvia Funkhouser, Shirley lived a life defined by faith, family, and an unwavering commitment to others. She stayed anchored by her favorite scripture, Jeremiah 29:11, trusting always in God's plans for hope and a future.
As a lifelong member of the Midland Church of the Brethren, Shirley served her church in many capacities, including as custodian, Sunday School teacher, church historian and librarian, ever championing the peace witness and Christian Education. A servant at heart, Shirley made it her mission to ensure no one ever felt unwelcome or forgotten. She often picked local children up for church and was the first to welcome and greet visitors.
She was also known for her card ministry, sending handwritten messages of gratitude, encouragement, and sympathy to friends and neighbors. She took special care when writing to children, using her beautiful, formal handwriting and addressing envelopes to them directly, knowing the simple delight a child feels when receiving their own mail.
This same care extended to her work and her hobbies. Throughout her life, Shirley served her community as a census taker, librarian, postmaster, and teacher of Weekday Religious Education for Fauquier County Public Schools. She also provided transportation to medical appointments for people in need. An avid gardener, her hands were rarely still; she lovingly tended the flower beds at both her home and at church. As a dedicated genealogist, she co-authored a family history book with her mother and organized bi-annual reunions to ensure family bonds remained strong across generations.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son, Lorne Blaine Holmes; and her brother, Gordon Funkhouser. She is survived by her husband, Johnny Brooks; children, Regina Holmes, Scott Brooks (Michelle), and Andrea Campbell (Scott); brother Mike Funkhouser (Ruth); and her "bonus sister," Hazel Bohling (Ken). She also leaves behind her talented and much-loved grandchildren, Zac, Abby, Caitlyn (Ethan), Jessica, and Jeremy, and many dear friends. She and Johnny created a lasting and loving legacy through the family they blended together.
In Shirley's memory, the family suggests live plants to honor Shirley's love of gardening. Memorial donations may be made to the Midland Church of the Brethren, "By the Manner of Their Living" endowment fund started in honor of her son, Lorne.
Shirley lived her life making sure everyone felt loved; may we continue in her ministry of loving others as Christ first loved us.
