Philip Burchill Obituary

Burchill, Dr. Phillip Stephen

Dr. Philip Burchill, 94, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on June 6, 2012, at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family.

Philip was born December 2, 1917, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, the only child of Philip Samuel Burchill and Anna Kingsbury.

Philip graduated from Marquette University and Medical School, after which he immediately joined the Navy.

Prior to his ship assignment, he was posted to San Francisco where he met the woman of his dreams, Jacklyn Claire Davidson. They wrote letters continuously to each other for two years while he was at sea during World War II.

Philip and Jacklyn married on January 21, 1945.

After completing his naval duties he started his private practice in internal medicine in Los Angeles, working at both the California and Good Samaritan Hospitals. Together they raised four children and have lived in the Silverlake area for over 60 years.

Philip was a man of many passions and hobbies. He was an avid photographer, orchid grower, fly fisherman. He loved the mountains taking his family camping in the Mineral King/Sequoia National Forest area each summer for many years.

After the kids were grown, he and Jacklyn traveled the world including a visit to his hometown of Fond du Lac each summer, and enjoyed a second home in New Zealand for 15 years.

He was a constant reader and after retirement would be found in his favorite chair in his handsome library for hours each day. His satisfaction for his career was immense saying he could not think of anything more fascinating than the human body. His greatest passion of all though, was for the love of his life, Jacklyn. They were married 67 years.

Philip is survived by his adoring wife Jacklyn; children Ann (Dennis Kundsin), Philip (Gillian), Susan, and Mary (Mark Maxson); five grandchildren: Brian and Jack Maxson, and Philip, Matthew and Megan Burchill; other relatives and friends.

VISITATION: Family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, June 11, 2012, at the Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery, 687 Fond du Lac Ave., from 10 to 11 a.m.

SERVICES: A Liturgy of the Word Funeral Service will be celebrated on Monday, 11 a.m. at the Chapel of the Risen Christ. The Rev. Edward Sippel will serve as celebrant. Philip will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery, Fond du Lac.

My father worked as a gardner, maintenance worker at their beautiful homes on Silver Lake. Both her and her husband were absolutely wonderful. I would have loved to see them one last time to see what we have become. They always made me and my family feel welcomed in their beautiful house while my father worked there in early 1990's. God Bless them and their family.

Dr. Burchill was my physician from the 1950's until I left California. We had kept in touch over the following years. Dr. Burchill was the most dedicated physician I have ever known. When I was a child, he was always kind to me in his office while I was in awe of him.
I was just one of many whose life was affected by Dr. Burchill's fast thinking and board medical knowledge. Simply put, he saved my life. What more can one say as a tribute to any man?
He cared about helping his patients. Their health and well-being was of primary importance to him. When he retired from practice, it was a double loss. First there was the loss of his expertise to his patients, and secondly to the medical profession in general.
My condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with his family.

I have known Dr. Burchill for over sixty years. In 1950, he gave me my first job after I had graduated as a medical assistant. I worked for him until 1975 (twenty five years).
Dr. Burchill LIVED to treat his patients day and night. I saw him work many miracles on his patients and many other doctor's patients. Many times, after seeing these miracles, I would tell him that he could “walk on water”. That always got an embarrassed grin from him. The high number of doctor's that entrusted their families to his care always impressed me.
My family and I have kept in touch with him and his family through the following years. Dr. Burchill and his family have always my family as part of their family for which I am very appreciative.
He will be greatly missed by many.
My love and thoughts are with the Burchill family.

DR. Burchill became my physician in 1954. His care and concern for me prevented the loss of a kidney. I think he lost the friendship of a urologist colleague at that time. I am now an 80 year old lady (with both kidneys!)that has always been grateful for his care. My parents later became his patients until he retired. My thoughts are with you all.
