He loved life and he taught everyone he knew how to love it too. In all those years in Fitchburg, he was more than a good neighbor, he seemed to pop up at our house or somewhere around town at just the right time....whenever you needed a good laugh or a good word. He was very magical and powerful that way. Love to our old friends Bonnie and Chris and Glen. We'll remember him always with smiles on our faces.

Drut,
I can't believe you are gone. More than a half century ago we were cruising Main St., shooting hoops at Coolidge Park and bowling at Whalom Park. It seems like yesterday. Memories of those days always leave me laughing. We know that God took you because he needed a good laugh in these hard times.

Arthur, otherwise known to us as OGO “O Great One” was one of the first community health center directors I met when I began working at the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers (League) 17 years ago, and we immediately hit it off. Arthur always made me laugh. Many times I thought I was a contestant on “Jeopardy” with Arthur’s many trivia questions, and I often wondered if he knew how to be serious. I quickly learned that I could count on him, especially when we embarked on a “fun”raising campaign for the League through an Annual Golf Tournament, which he Chaired. Whether it was rounding up foursomes, soliciting donations, picking up tee signs or MC’ing the post tournament raffle, Arthur was instrumental in making the League’s Golf Tournament the success that it is today. One especially memorable moment was when Arthur came to my house on a Saturday to load up his car with boxes of things to be brought to the Golf Course early the following Monday morning. I still had to pick up signs that I had ordered from a vendor in Brookline and Arthur came with me. My then 2-year old son who was in his car seat, insisted on listening to his tape and Arthur had to sing along. I’ll never forget driving down my street, windows open wide, and Arthur belting out “The Wheels on the Bus.” It was priceless!

To Bonnie, Glen, Chris and family – He was one-of-a kind and will be missed greatly.

shaps,

your passing has come as such a shock and i dont think the reality of it will come untill many of us return to lhs in september. you were such a spirited man and you always had the ability to brighten a room full of students. i will never forget your sarcasm or your "hey stupid" comments along with a wack to the arm as we passed in the hall.
you made sitting in drivers ed. for 3hrs after school a good thing and its strange to think that in the sence of presence you wont be part of lhs. the one memory that i could never forget would be our games of tick tac toe and how you always won, you never told me your trick.
my heart goes out to your family in there time of need.

may your spirit live on.

Shaps-
You were such an awesome and helpful person. You are part of what made lhs bearable for me cause i could always find you singing around the halls when i was wondering about and you were always fast about saving me from detentions when other teachers saw me wonder.
I remember me and my buddy mary always crossing our fingers hoping for you to be the sub when we walked into empty rooms,or walking into class to see you already in there.Drivers ed when you threw the chair and made us laugh was the best. You were one of a kind and you will be greatly missed.

Arthur,

Hearing the news that you will no longer be here with us came as quite a shock.

Upon returning to school this year, it will not be the same without your sarcasm, your smile, and your company. It was a pleasure to have been given the opportunity to work with you at LHS, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

You will be deeply missed,

Shappy! I cannot believe you are gone, seems like just yesterday I was sitting in a classroom with you and smiling and laughing. You were such a great guy and you made a difference in many kids lives. Thank you for all the times you made me smile and for everything you did for me, you helped me alot in drivers ed but more than that you were a friend and you will be missed dearly by so many and myself. May you rest in peace.

Shap you made our study a blast. When I heard of your passing I didn't belive it, nor do I now, i won't belive it til I go back to school and go into study and not see you sitting there with every new paper in New England on your desk. I'll miss your riddles and your sarcasm. LHS will never be the same and i will never forget you. You were a great man Shapland.

Mr. Shapland,
I don't even know what to say.... This is just such a huge shock. I'm going to really miss you Shapland. This upcoming LHS school year I was looking forward to seeing you in the halls and having you as a sub teacher. Last year you gave me plenty of warm and hilarious memories. Because of you I know what 4 states have capitals starting with the same first letter :)
Thank you Mr. Shapland. Us "knucklehead loser" students are really going to miss you and your daily word jumbles and your very helpful Driver's Ed class. I'll miss not being able to wear our art club tie-dye shirts on the same day again.
But I'll always remember you.
Love to all of your family.
Rest in peace.

Shapland was the best substitute at LHS. He made my 4 years worth while. There was never a dull moment with Shap as your sub. He will be missed.

July 15, 2008

Shap,
Roaming the halls, I could always expect to see you doing the same but then I'd be greeted with a whack over the head with a newspaper and a "knucklehead!" I'll never forget the sighs of relief from all my classmates when we'd walk into class and see you sitting at the desk, probably doing the daily jumble.
I really hope that wherever you are, you can still laugh and wear a different sweater-vest everyday of the week! I'll miss you Shap!

Mr. Shapland is a part of LHS that will always be missed. He could almost always be seen at LHS sports events and activities, proudly supporting the Blue & White.

Anyone that went through Driver Ed. knows that Shap was a one-of-a-kind teacher whose antics will be sorely missed.

It's truly sad that no one else will debate over the pronunciation of the capital of Kentucky, or be called knuckle-head or loser in a more caring way.

My deepest sympathies go out to his family. Rest in peace, Shap.

July 14, 2008

Mr.Shapland,
I would like to start this off by saying how wonderful of a person you were. The way you used to "bada-bi-badabum" through the hallways at school always brought a smile to everyone's faces. You were everyone's favorite. I will miss you we all will miss you. I will always remember how much you loved the songs "You raise me up---and Joy to the world"....gosh you played those songs 3 times in one class. I will try harder to solve the word jumbles. Although, I never could solve them. I'll try harder for you!!!!!!!

May you forever rest in peace!!<3

Arthur: I was truly numb when i received word of your untimely passing, earlier today. You touched the lives of SO many people at LHS, both young and old. You were a fountain of knowledge, and you always had a genuine, warm smile and greeting for all. I will certainly miss our lively discussions in the teacher's room, which always ended in a good way, with your "special" salute to me. I am honored to have known you, and to have called you Friend. You will NEVER be forgotten!!

Rest In Peace.

Mr. Shapland knew how to light up everyones day with just a simple joke or a smile. He never went a day without making at least one person smile. When he walked into the office at the High school, he always joked around with everyone. His sarcastic personality will be greatly missed. I am so grateful that I was able to be in his Drivers Ed class before he passed. I wouldnt of wanted to be taught any other way.

Thank you Shap, for always being there for everyone and all the students in the halls. You will be greatly missed and you were loved unconditionally by many. Thank you again. Your in our heart and prayers.

SHAPPY,
this is going to be very hard for after loosing my greatgrandmother last week. you could always, i mean always brighten up my day no matter what. you're part of the reason i loved going back to visit LHS. if it wasnt for you, i wouldnt even know how to drive or any of the million laws there are about driving. i just have so many great memories of you, especially as a substitute teacher. you'd let us do anything, but always make us do scrambles from the paper. you always just had the random but interesting facts that i loved hearing. your a great man, and it really is true.. only the good die young.

Rest in Peace Angel

Mr. Shapland's death came as a shock to pretty much everyone I know. Or that I know of. I know that it made me cry. He taught my Drivers Ed class as he probably taught alot of people's but, he was always so funny in the hallways and always made you smile even when you knew you didnt want to but his sarcastic sense of humor and funny/also sarcastic jokes made you laugh. I remember this one time when I was working in the office at the High school, he came in, saw that I was upset about, god knows something, and just came over and asked what was wrong while having a conversation with a different person. I know it sounds so stupid as a memory but..It meant alot knowing someone would stop a conversation just to see if I was alright.

Mr. Shapland, you will be greatly missed. And whoever they get to replace you for Drivers Ed, wont be as good. That much I know. And no one will ever have the sense of humor and the great life that you always showed to us in the hallways. Thank you for everything. Your in our hearts and prayers.
