Lawrence Patch Obituary

Loving husband and father, Lawrence "Larry" J. Patch, 64, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at his home of heart failure. Born in Detroit, MI, to the late Howard R. Patch and Helen G. Patch, he moved to Hollywood, FL, in the early 1950's.

At the time of his death, Larry was employed as a Store Manager for Publix Super Markets, Inc., loyally serving them for more than 47 years in the Hollywood and Melbourne area. A dedicated employee, Larry was highly respected by his peers and associates alike. He was a mentor and true friend to many people, treating everyone with dignity and respect. Larry was a most worthy recipient of the highest honor bestowed by Publix Super Markets, Inc., the George W. Jenkins Award.

Larry enjoyed traveling, golf, and he was a great photographer. He was a long time Miami Dolphin ticket holder and an avid Detroit Tigers and UCF Knight fan.

Surviving are his devoted wife, Melissa, of 42 years; his loving children, of whom he was so proud, one son, Richard (Tonia) Patch; one daughter, Julie (Paul) Prestopnik; and one granddaughter, Elyse Prestopnik, whom he dearly treasured. He was her "Pop-Pop" and she was his "Punkin". Other survivors include his mother, three younger brothers, Michael (Debbie), Timothy (Pam) and Martin (Lisa) Patch. His father-in-law, Dick Huffman; one brother-in-law, Rick (Pam) Huffman; three sister-in-laws, Melinda Calder, Rebecca (Andrew) Kriner, and Cheryl (Ronald) Humphrey; and many nieces and nephews.

Beckman-Williamson Funeral Homes and Crematory, 5400 Village Drive, Viera, FL, is in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, August 15th, from 1-4 pm.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

In 10 yoars with Publix (1981 - 1991) I worked for Larry for nearly four years at the original Miramar store. He was one of the nicest managers in the company - sometimes too nice for his own good; but I'm glad he never changed. He had a great sense of humor and an easy smile. Those were good years!

We miss you so much Mr. Patch, I wish you could have met my second son Tyson, and of course watch the Masters this year. I think of you everyday and wish our friendship would have been longer but at least I had the honor of knowing you. I must say you really made everyday at 202 a great day.

I was very sad to hear of Larry's passing just yesterday. I retired in 1999 after 18 years of service and was working with Larry at the time. He was a great manager, friend, and family man. He supported me greatly while I returned to school. He was disappointed when I did not walk for my degree because I had no family here at the time. He said he would have been there cheering me on because he was so proud of my accomplishments. That really meant a lot to me and I will never forget his support and love that Larry shared with all. He will be greatly missed. The heavens picked a great man!! My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Please accept our condolences at this time during your bereavement. Mr. Patch was manager at the Malabar Rd Publix when we moved into Palm Bay and it seemed he was always the first to greet you as you were coming through the doors. He always had a smile on his face! God bless your family and may you receive great peace and comfort from our heavenly Father.

Mr. Patch was a guiding force for me at 16. He taught me how a grocery store ran, and how great Publix can be. After almost 25 years of service, I can still hear his voice in my head. And for that I am thankful.

As a vendor for Carroll Distributing Co. Larry was one of my all time favorite managers to work with, any time I would go to his office he would always put his work to the side and give me his full attention and that was always a great feeling that he cared for everyone like they were his friends. You will truly be missed my friend, until we meet again. My prayers go out to his family God Bless you.
