My time growing up with Dan as a teacher and then as a friend, was no less than wonderful. His demeanor, teaching style, and expectations for all of his students and `associates´ was far from lackluster. He strived for all of us to be great and achieve not only a satisfactory life, but an honest life filled with manners, respect, and care for others, while affirming a potential for intelligence and compassion far into the future. He had no qualms stopping by "WelchLand", as he called it, to discuss with my Dad any questionable behaviors that I may have had in school. I´m sure some of you know exactly what I mean! He would also keep me busy after school stacking hay, straw, and doing assorted field work on the farms. It was a great opportunity to earn some money and learn well needed discipline from a true master. The Welch family along with the late Gordon Bennett enjoyed our stays at the camp with great enthusiasm. I will be, quite literally, eternally grateful for his generosity, openness, and willingness to listen to us even when we were wrong. Even into my adulthood, Dan was a good friend. From plowing our driveways to pulling a plough 5 miles for a simple crop of sweet corn, he was always there for us. When it came time for pay, he wanted nothing and suggested that a 12 pack of brew would suffice. On that note, I will miss having beers in the Morton Building with Dan and Bill the most. We certainly had some interesting conversations, and what was `said´ in the shop, stayed in the shop! It is also worth noting that while Dan was certainly a great soul, the rest of the Skinner `clan´ is just like him. Generosity, compassion, a willingness to help, and the ability to overcome adversity comes to mind. I can´t think of a family more deserving of Dan´s love. I truly appreciate Dan´s friendship and his lifelong efforts to forge me into the Father and Husband that I aspire to become. I will miss him dearly.

The world has lost a wonderful person. I was very fortunate to have Mr. Skinner as my teacher for several different classes. He was the best teacher at Waterloo High School. He really cared about his students. I remember his big smile, how much he enjoyed teaching us history, and certainly playing trivia games so that we could get to know history facts. Condolences to the family.
