Ernesto "Nestor" Ortiz

November 6, 1946 – October 23, 2025

GENEVA - Ernesto "Nestor" Ortiz, 78, of Rochester, New York, formerly of Geneva, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2025. He was born on November 6, 1946, in Yauco, Puerto Rico, the beloved son of the late Amalia Báez Ortiz and Antonio Ortiz.

He was predeceased by his wife, Gricelda (née Santell) Ortiz, with whom he shared many loving years. Nestor is survived by his children, Nestor Ortiz, Leslie Noyes, and Luz (Kenny) Rivera; his cherished grandchildren, Gricelda Cruz, Kairo Rivera, and Levi Rivera; his wife, Aida Merced; brothers, Luis Ortiz and Alberto Ortiz; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will remember him with love.

A proud graduate of Geneva High School, Class of 1966, Nestor went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. Following his military service, he dedicated over 25 years to the City of Geneva Department of Public Works and later continued his commitment to public service with the City of Rochester.

Nestor was a passionate athlete who excelled in baseball, volleyball, and golf, and found joy in coaching and mentoring others. His skill and generous spirit earned him the respect and affection of everyone who knew him. A gifted musician and singer, he shared his love of music through church and community performances, bringing joy to countless people.

Nestor will be remembered for his unwavering faith, dedication to family, and the warmth and laughter he brought to every gathering. His legacy of love, music, and service will live on through the lives he touched.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Apostles Church, 530 Lyell Ave., Rochester, on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow in the New York State Veterans Cemetery in Romulus, New York, on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 1:00 p.m.
