I was in Mr. Lazenby's first 4th-grade class at Cobbles School, 1967-68, which I think may have been his first year of teaching. To have a male teacher was novel, but to have such a sensitive man providing warm, caring guidance was invaluable to me as a 10-year old. I had a chance to see and thank Gary a few years ago—during his last years at Indian Landing—and it was a joy to see him sending kids off on the bus at the end of the school day. I wasn't sure he remembered me, but I will always remember him, and very fondly. My sincere condolences to his family.

Gary warmly welcomed our family when our 2 sons, Dave and Ben, started at Indian landing. He was the best principal they ever had. He knew all the children by name, and was so kind to each and every one of them. Our community is losing one of the very finest educators that ever was.

I had the honor of having Mr. Lazenby as my fifth grade teacher at Cobbles 43 years ago. He was the most thoughtful, encouraging, fun teacher I ever had. As he spoke to you he made you feel like you were the only person in the room. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing.

When I think about the community he influenced, the school he managed, the church he supported, businesses he contributed, etc, it reflected his strong moral-fiber and quality of character, he was one-in-a-million, in a class all his own.

At Cobbles, my children were not in his class, but had great respect and liking for him. Knew him as a colleague and always like to see him even after I moved up to the High School. He was an effective board member at FFCU-made me smile every time I saw his portrait.

Both of my girls, Donna and Anita Black, have fond memories of their school experience at Cobbles when Gary was a teacher. I had the opportunity to work with Gary as his secretary at Indian Landing School. Gary's positive attitude and love of children greatly enhanced the Penfield educational environment. Our love, prayers, and hugs to Judy and Lazenby families.

I first met Gary when I was hired at Cobbles from BOCES in 1981. Gary was a warm and welcoming mentor with an easy humor and an attitude toward children that I admired. He understood equality and 'fair' for all learners! Later as principal he led even the most challenging students to accept their own dignity and gifts with responsibility. All that knew Gary, are better for the experience! God bless his entire family, including his brother Larry, with whom I am now fortunate to be able to work with.

The Board of Grace Community Services convened last evening. We said a prayer for Gary and spoke of his many gifts that he brought to us. He will be greatly missed.
"We thank you so much for the life of Gary Lazenby. Today we celebrate all that he has given us and the legacy of his life on earth.
Thank you for what a good friend he has been. We remember how he always supported us through the difficult seasons and rejoiced with us in the good times.
Thank for the ways in which Gary has given to our society. We think about what a kind and generous man Gary has been, and his love for community life. May his acts of service be a lasting light to us all.
We praise you Lord for the working life of Gary. We bring to mind some of his many achievements in helping people blossom through his teaching and leadership, and thank you for the countless blessings that he leaves behind.
Finally Lord, we are so grateful for Gary. We will always deeply treasure him in our hearts and give thanks for everything he has given us.
Amen."

When offered my teaching job 15 years ago; I was given the choice of 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade. I chose 3rd. Why? Because I had Mr. Lazenby for third grade! I remember how much I loved third grade; how he made each day fun, how he cared deeply for every child (how we got to use the "Speak and Spell"). The teachers we remember are the ones who touch our lives forever. I can only hope I'm half as good of a teacher as he was. Hoping happy memories fill your days to come.

If a life, well lived, may be defined through the lives that are touched, through others who are perhaps better people for that contact - so seemed to me to be Gary's gift. Condolences to his family who worked so hard to light his journey home.

Before moving school into another school district, I remember Mr. Lazenby calling me into his office at Indian Landing to provide some words of encouragement. He had just finished a lunch meeting and I recall him offering me the leftovers. As we sat there and chatted, I ate, and began to believe/feel as though he had done this all for me. Mr. Lazenby had a unique way of making his students feel valued and known. He was a gift.
