Gary Taras Obituary

GENEVA - Gary ""Browser"" Taras, 69, of Geneva, New York, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on February 13, 1956, in Geneva, New York, Gary was a proud graduate of DeSales High School, Class of 1974. During his time there, he made his mark as a standout catcher playing for the first Catholic school in New York State to win a sectional title, a historic achievement that remained a source of pride throughout his life. He continued his education at Brockport College, graduating in 1981.

Gary built a successful career as a real estate appraiser with Parrott Appraisal. Known for his dedication and professionalism, he brought integrity and insight to every assignment.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gary was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife Kathy; his children Geoffrey Taras and Jamie (Zach) Farrell; and his cherished grandchildren Grace, Zoey, and Stella Farrell. He also leaves behind his brothers Steve (Jeanie) and Eugene; sisters Tracey (Don Lagger), Lynne, and Jackie. His memory will be held close by all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his father Eugene, mother Lucille, stepmother Lucy, father-in-law Stanley Chizinski, and mother-in-law Dottie Chizinski.

Gary's passions were many. He was an avid bowler and golfer, sports in which he not only participated but excelled. On the golf course especially, he distinguished himself by winning multiple tournaments and achieving several hole-in-ones over the years. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Gary followed the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers with unwavering loyalty. He also cheered on the New York Rangers and Syracuse basketball with equal enthusiasm. Whether playing cards with friends or watching a game with family, Gary brought warmth and camaraderie to every gathering.

Above all else, Gary was a loving husband, father, and "Pap", roles he embraced wholeheartedly. His presence brought joy to those around him and left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to share in his life.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 1, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 N. Main St., Geneva, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at St. Stephen's Church, 48 Pulteney St., Geneva. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Gary moved to Grove St. in sixth grade, I think, and became one of the best point guards and catchers in DeSales High's great history of athletics as well as a great friend. As our catcher, he was a field general as well, who's probably talking baseball with Pirate great Manny Sanguillen and others up there in the eternal Three Rivers Stadium in the sky. Catch you on the flip side, my friend... ya done good.

I was so sorry to hear of Gary’s passing. My heartfelt condolences to the Taras family.
I first met Gary years ago growing up playing little league with Jamie. Of course I didn’t fully appreciate Gary’s character until I was working at the GCC. I always enjoyed running into Gary at the golf course and still admire his genuine care for myself and others - Always asking about what I was up to and where I’d been. Didn’t matter where he was headed, he always had time for a chat. I will always remember him fondly with his broomstick putter and a smile. Prayers for Kathy, Geoff, and Jamie, and the rest of the family. Gary will be missed!

Great guy and great family. Gary, Geoff and I went to Pittsburgh in 1992 to watch our beloved Pirates take on Atlanta in the National League Championship Series. We caught two games -- one win, one loss -- but had an incredible time, especially with 57,000 fans at both games in Three Rivers Stadium. I'll never forget it ... or him. RIP Gary. Thoughts and prayers to Kathy and the family.

My fondness memory of Gary was in late 60´s playing touch football on St Stephen´s school parking lot on warm summer day along with Dan Hennessy as we battled the older 8th graders. One play sticks out in my mind is Gary threw a rainbow long pass that I was able to run under for a TD. Funny what memories matter the most in life.

May God Rest his Soul! Gary and I enjoyed many a great times playing basketball in City League and the YMCA. I always wanted to be on his team as he had a great move to the basket and I followed him on his side to the left or right and new he would dump off the ball as the defense converged on him. He fed me many points over they years. In fact during the time at the Y, I came up with the nick name Cousin It. Do not ask me how or why but that was it for a while. Gary sang on the bus heading to football games with DHS. We had a super time playing for American Legion Ball on our way to win a championship with our rag tag uniforms! God rest your soul my friend and you will never be forgotten. Sad I was not been able to catch up with you over the last many years.

There is too little space to fully express my feelings at Gary's leaving us. I haven't figured it out yet, haven't wrapped my mind around it. Prayers for peace and strength to Kathy, Geoff and Jamie. As I said to him as I left his room at the nursing home: "Catch you on the flip side, bub" ...
