Karl Schaup Obituary

WATERLOO - On February 6, at the age of 69, Karl Allen Schaup, better known to his many close friends as "Captain Al" or "Schaupy" passed away at his home. He was born to Mary and Karl Schaup July 30, 1955 in Geneva. As animal lovers themselves, his parents supported his desire as a young person to raise and show various types of birds - a hobby that he continued throughout his life.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Al started "Whopper Stopper" charters decades ago in Port Bay on Lake Ontario. He was well known for his passion for the sport and was well-respected by other captains for his outstanding fishing ability. Many of his customers booked yearly trips, knowing they would catch a "whopper," as well as make lasting memories. If Al wasn't fishing, he was hunting and running dogs for coyotes, raccoons, ducks and rabbits with his best friend "Peanut."

As a lifetime and regular member of the North Seneca Sportman's Club, he enjoyed playing euchre and participated in other club activities.

He is survived by his life partner Sandy Banks; his hunting girls, "Pistol and Grit"; his sister, Patricia Schaup (Marika, alias the Honey Badger); children, Jessica Schaup (Joe), James Schaup (Mae); his grandchildren, Logan and Maddie; his niece, Eva (Dom and sons) of New Caledonia; and many cousins. Al is predeceased by his parents, Karl and Mary Schaup; and his half-brother, Pierre Schaup. At the request of the family, contributions may be made to the Port Bay Improvement Association at P.O. Box 142, Wolcott, N.Y. 14590 and the North Seneca Sportsman and Rifle Club at 334 Route 318, Phelps, N.Y. 14532.

Starting at noon, a Celebration of Life will be held at the North Seneca Sportsman Club on March 29, 2025.

Gone Fishing

I'll save a spot on the river's bend,

for all those, I call family and friend.

And if the fish no longer bite

or seem no longer worth the fight,

'cause it's not me that you are missin,'

don't worry - be happy - I've gone fishin.'

Miss your talks on the phone and going to either the bar in Clyde to get a hamburger and a Pepsi or going to the Chinese restaurant in Geneva. Truly will miss hearing your voice and all the fishing talk that we did with my salmon trolling flies I made you. I think about you every day and from time to time feel really sad that I´ll never see you again. Truly miss you buddy. God bless and one day I´ll see you and go fishing with you and bill again. Bye for now but not forever.

I met once Al in Harrisburg, PA at the Outdoor Show. We talked quite a bit and it was easy to see that Al was just a laid back outdoors man. I booked a Browns in the following May. We fished several over the years an we had fun times. The years flew by and we all got older.

I was very sorry to hear about captain Al´s passing! My dad started taking all of us boys on his boat when we were kids! It grew from one boat to 2-3 boats over the years. We were amazed that on the slowest days when the fish weren´t biting Al would some how be the only boat catching fish! We also got more than an education about fishing while on his boat!:)
I know my father was in his glory on Al´s boat every year. It was amazing to forget about things for a while and just fish on the Whopper Stopper!
I have some of the best memories from those fishing trips!
God bless Captain Al! You will be missed!!!

So sorry to hear of Al's passing. Dick has many memories of Al
's mother bringing him to his house for birds and to stay with him at the state fair just enjoying the birds. He remembers many hours just spent talking bird talk with Al. Al parents were just the greatest people.

I´m so sorry to hear of this. He was always one of my favorite cousins. Maybe his Uncle Jack, that he loved ( my Dad) and he will be going fishing. Or be in the bar in the sky. This is sad.
