Norma Updyke Obituary

CANANDAIGUA - Norma Updyke passed away October 11, 2021 at Penn Yan Manor.

A private sharing of memories and music will be held by members of Norma's family.

Norma was born on May 20, 1932, the daughter of Edwin Owen Updyke and Dorothy Congdon Updyke.

Norma received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Marymount College, Tarrytown, N.Y. She worked with a team of Swiss designers on a corporate identification program for Corning Glass. She continued as a product director at Geigy Corporation in Ardsley, graphic designer at American Heritage Publishers in NYC, project director at Sangren & Murtha, and did packaging design at Sterling Drug, which took product design from #8 in the marketplace to #2 with her design. At Dellwood Dairy, she re-color coded product packaging with award-winning design. Norma's firm, Studio 26, was selected by Carquest Corporation to develop a family image in their packaging of automotive parts. Product sales increased 35% nationally. Tokyo design magazine, IDEA, in a special edition on 8 USA independent graphic designers, highlighted eight pages of Norma's designs. After retirement, Norma joined the Riolo real estate group in Hastings-on-Hudson.

Norma enjoyed skiing, kayaking, traveling, family and friends in Canandaigua, Hastings-on-Hudson and Elmira. Her surviving cat, Sonny, has a lovely new home.

She is survived and will be missed by her sister, Gretchen Updyke Kesel, and brother-in-law, Harold Kesel; nephews, Scott (Regina) Kesel, Jeffrey (Mary Beth) Kesel, and Martin (Jean Ferris) Kesel; grand-nephews and nieces, Jordan (Danielle), Jesse, Justin (Aubrey), Collin, Sarah (Ben) Hartson, Stephen Craven, Erin, Evan, Derek, Jack, and Nick; and great-grand-nephews and nieces, Abram, Patrick, Lola, McKenna, Harry, and Ross.

The family wishes to thank special home care by family and others, the wonderful staff at F.F. Thompson Hospital, as well as the loving staff at Penn Yan Manor, for their compassion and care of Norma and all of us.

ALICE MAY KAIN

October 18, 2021

I worked with Norma at Westinghouse back in 1950's. She was a bridesmaid in my wedding to Marty Kain in 1953. Our friends had occasional get togethers with Norma in Hastings-on- the Hudson and in Canandaigua. I always enjoyed receiving her Christmas cards that she had designed. I also shared her love for cats. I enjoyed my visits with her mother and father. I send my love and sympathy to you all.
