Vann Jones

PEN YANN - Vann Jones Age 79, of Penn Yan, and formerly of St. Augustine, Florida, passed away March 2, 2025 at the VA Medical Center in Canandaigua, N.Y.

Born on January 10, 1946, in Penn Yan, Vann was the son of Clarence and Elizabeth (Christensen) Jones. He graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1964. Vann honorably served as a combat Marine Veteran during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he worked in a number of mines, beginning in Himrod, and a number of other mines across the country. He finished his career with being employed for over 20 years as a Lieutenant Deputy Sheriff with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Department in Florida, before eventually returning to his hometown of Penn Yan in retirement.

Vann was an avid hunter and fisherman. He fished offshore in Florida and often in Keuka Lake. He often traveled into Canada with family and friends for fishing trips and into Maine for hunting trips. He was a proud member of the Maine Big Buck hunting club having harvested a 223 lb. 10 point buck at the Thompson Brock hunting camp in Maine.

Vann was predeceased by his parents; his spouse; Joanne (Maddox) Jones; and his son Christian M. Jones. He is survived by his daughter, Kelly (Todd) James; his brother, Daryl Jones; his sister, Pam (Gary) Peterson; and three grandchildren, Anna, Luke, and Alex, in addition to numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the American Legion Post #355, 2001 Himrod Rd., Penn Yan, N.Y. 14527. The Weldon Funeral Home of Penn Yan is assisting the family during this time.
