William Hoar Obituary

Dr. William "Bill" Hoar was born in Pleasantville, NJ to parents William and Irene Hoar on February 12, 1944. He passed away peacefully in his home on June 27, 2023 at the age of 79.

He grew up in Pleasantville, where he attended The Friends School in Atlantic City and graduated from Pleasantville High School. Growing up, he helped in his father's clothing store, and fished with friends. He attended Carthage College in Kenosha, WI, majoring in history. He earned both his MA and PhD degrees at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. He served in Ethiopia for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer and three years in Taiwan as a Lutheran youth missionary. While in Taiwan, he met and married Karen, his wife of 52 years. Dr. Hoar taught art history at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD from 1977 to 2009. Upon retirement, he gave art history lectures for several years aboard Princess Cruises cruise ships. Over the course of his lifetime, he traveled to nearly 40 countries.

Dr. Hoar is survived by his wife Karen Hoar; his three children Theresa (Scott) Magelssen, Daniel (Kisha) Hoar, and Sarah (Brian) Buckmeier; along with his five grandchildren Eleanor, Claire, Sarah, Ari, and Trygg.

In lieu of flowers, Dr. Hoar requested memorials be given to the United Nations World Food Programme.
