Paul Flood Obituary

Paul Murphy Flood, age 90, passed away on February 25, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and caregivers. He was born on November 19, 1934, in Washington DC, the son of the late Paul Murphy and Ann Knight. Paul's natural father passed away when he was four days old, and his mother married Richard Flood. They lived in Alexandria, VA for several years before moving to the West End area of Atlanta, GA. Paul attended Marist High School where he was an academic and athletic standout. He was the Valedictorian of his class, lettering in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He graduated in 1953.

After high school, Paul was drafted by the MLB team Milwaukee Braves and assigned to their minor league team the Atlanta Crackers. Apparently, the signing bonus did not entice him, so he enrolled into the Georgia Institute of Technology where he played baseball for the Yellow Jackets. He was an active member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He obtained both a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the School of Industrial Engineering.

In 1955, Paul was introduced to June Rowland and started dating thereafter. Paul and June were married on March 15, 1958. Later that year, Paul and June moved to Fort Monmouth, NJ for Paul to fulfill his military obligations. They were excited to return to Atlanta in 1960, and Paul was an Instructor in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech for two years.

After his time at Georgia Tech, Paul began working for the management consulting firm Kurt Salmon Associates, Inc in 1962. He worked his way up to Vice President and General Manager. In the process he expanded the operations and institutional footprint of the firm when he created the Healthcare Division in 1970. He ran this division until 1983 when he branched out on his own and founded FLR Health Resources. FLR had offices in Atlanta, Dallas and Boston and served the largest hospital systems nationwide. In 1989, he divested his interest in FLR and created Chattahoochee Health Resources. In this endeavor he used his vast experience with complex healthcare systems across multiple states to work with executive management and boards of directors. Paul enjoyed his work and stayed active and engaged until the age of 84.

After Paul and June had moved to numerous locations following his work, they settled in Sandy Springs, GA in 1967. Paul's most proud accomplishment was his family. Paul did not have siblings and came from a very small family; therefore, his family was a paramount focus in his life. Paul and June had three sons, Pat, Henry (born prematurely surviving only a few days), and Jim. Paul was very active in their lives attending their sports activities, golfing at the Atlanta Athletic Club, backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, as well as spending weekends at their beloved "Creekhouse" on Lake Lanier. Paul was an avid Georgia Tech football fan, a season ticket holder for 60+ years. Some might say he was an "over the top" Tech fan.

In 1994, Paul and June moved to Cumming, Ga and built their dream home on Lake Lanier. This was a wonderful chapter of Paul's life due to his love of the lake and all activities associated with lake life. Paul could be seen on his dock every weekend drinking his Jameson Irish Whiskey while enjoying friends, family, and his beloved dogs. He was committed to the preservation of Lake Lanier serving as a Board Member of the Lake Lanier Association for 25+ years.

Paul enthusiastically supported his two grandchildren, Hank and Kathryn. He attended every football and baseball game along with gymnastics and competitive dance competitions. Some might say he was "over the top" with this too. His deep love for them was evident.

In the 1970s, Paul served on the Board of Directors at the Atlanta Athletic Club and was a key organizer for the U.S Open Golf Championship in 1976. He was a Board Member of the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce. He was an Advisory Board Member of the Georgia Tech School of Industrial and Systems Engineering until the last few years of his life.

Paul is survived by his son, Pat Flood (Sara), his beloved grandchildren, Hank Flood (fiancé Ally Bork) and Kathryn Flood, his nephew Bob Voyles (Anne), grandnephews, Justin Voyles (Ashley) and Kevin Voyles. Paul was preceded in death by his wife, June Flood and his sons, Jim Flood and Henry Flood, sister-in-law, Betty Voyles, brother-in-law, Robert Voyles, and niece, Vicki Voyles.
