Andy would have officially been my brother-in-law three months after he passed, but he felt like a brother from the first time we hung out.
Andy always seemed to be smiling and his upbeat, easygoing personality was enjoyed by everyone he met. While he took an early departure from his loved ones, his spirit will have everlasting life.

April 9, 2011

We will never forget you Andy.
We are taking care of Missy as
you watch over her.

Diane;
You and your family have been in my thoughts and prayers. I am honored to be your sister in P.E.O. Please know you and your family are loved. Julie Gabriel

My Dear Missy,
Words and hugs could never express my sadness for you. You were Andy’s half and Andy was yours. You will always have that “oneness” though, because your love of a century will always be, no matter where your life will take you.
Take what peace you can of this, and know he is with God, at peace, always watching over you (and being boss :-) from every sun, moon, raindrop and snow flake. And down here you have family, friends, and adopted families surrounding you always.
I am and will be here via phone, email and hopefully person for you if you want to talk, share memories, cry or just stand next to you in spirit or person.

Missy and Diane, Andy and you all are one of only a few who has captivated my heart and soul over 40 some years of nursing. I think and say a quick prayer for you all often. Andy will be with you all forever! Memories are forever also.
Be strong, yet know weakness has its moments. This time with Andy will always be a ‘Best’ and will always be with you. Know you are thought of and loved!

March 21, 2011

Missy, We are so sorry for the loss that you've endured. Everytime you spoke about Andy, it was apparent how much you two were in love and so dedicated to each other.
May God comfort and guide you through these difficult times. In our thoughts and prayers, Valerie Davis & Family

Dear Missy, I was so saddened to hear when I came back to work this week of Andy’s passing. I’m sure as hard as this process will be for you; you know that he is with God now and watching over you always. Your experience has made me realize how important it is to cherish each and every day.
Your love for Andy is truly inspiring and I know God brought you together for this special reason. It was absolutely my pleasure and privilege getting to know your family and taking care of Andy those past couple months. I am so happy you guys got to go home and be around those who love and support you.
Andy made me a better nurse and for that I am forever grateful. Please know I think about you often and pray that you continue to have strength at this difficult time. Love Always, Abbey

To my dear friend Diane and her husband Ron - I've just heard this news and am so very, very sad for your loss. I didn't know Andy but have watched him grown up through the photos and Christmas cards Diane has sent me over the many years. My love to you, my friend - you are in my thoughts. Please also let your mom know that I send my love and condolences. Lynn Wickstrom Wigell

It all seems surreal; surely this could not possibly be happening. Andy with his quiet and gentle nature was just too young; he and Missy had just started their lives together. Cancer? Metastatic disease? Stage four? How could this be? You can imagine how hard that would be for a man so young and independent and who was used to calling the shots, but Andy handled it with dignity. Humor had always been a part of his life and in spite of the enormity of his pain and suffering, this did not change, he made us smile, laugh and created happy memories that will never fad. Andy left footprints on the hearts and minds of everyone who had ever known him with his sense of humor, zest for life, and his deep and abiding love for his wife Missy.
God placed many ‘angels’ on Andy’s journey. The pain caused by this disease is impossible to explain or understand, but the gift Andy was to all who came in contact with him is equally hard to explain. His short life left an indelible mark and caused all of us who knew him for even this very short time to take a step back and wonder if our lives have enriched the world as much as his did.
When healing and recovery were no longer possible and dying was inevitable, this young and vibrant couple loved each other intensely, and although the pain of impending loss was too deep for words, they bravely loved and supported each other until there were no more days. Rest in peace Andy, enjoy your eternal reward in heaven. I am blessed to have known you. We will always love you and look forward to the day we will see you again.

To the Gumbert family,
My heart aches for your loss. I did not know Andy or Missy, but I was a neighbor to Diane throughout our school years. From viewing these messages and the pictures, I see what wonderful family and friends he had around him. May God grant you peace and comfort in this time of sorrow and may the lovely memories put a smile on your face and in your heart.

I wanted to share a memory from elementary school. I went to elementary school (as well as church) with Kristin and Andy. When we were at Southwick,we had to run around the outside of the school for gym class. I remember doing this when I was in about 1st or 2nd grade. The older kids were in various places around the school encouraging us. I remember trying to run with my skinny little legs and it was really difficult! Then as I passed the front of the school I saw Andy standing with some other older kids. He was saying "Keep going Callie, you can do it!" I remember how encouraging and motivating it was to hear such kind words from him when I was doing something that was so challenging for me at the time! I had kind of forgotten how powerful it is to have someone who is willing to help you like he helped me that day. I think that I will always remember him as a friendly and helpful person because of this memory. My thoughts and prayers are with the Gumberts and I hope that this happy memory will bring a sliver of happiness in such a difficult a time.

My heart goes out to you both. As a parent myself, I cannot imagine the depth of your loss.
I viewed the video and I th ink he looks alot like Diane. He looked like he enjoyed life and was a very wonderful person and son. It is not the natural order of life to have a child go first. You and your entire family are in my prayers. Diane Morrison is in Florida and sends her condolences too.

I unfortunately only knew Andy for the last two months, but in that short time I could tell how special he was, and how much he loved you Missy. The way you stayed with him every moment that you could was amazing. I loved coming to work every night knowing that I would be taking care of Andy, and I enjoyed our nightly talks. I will always remember how, no matter how much pain he was in, when I walked by his room for the first time every night he would wave & say,"Hi, Tina" & ask me how my day was. Andy isn't in pain anymore, and Missy you will forever have a guardian angel watching over you.

Dear Missy, I'm so very sorry to hear of Andrew's passing. When you moved into the neiborhood, I introduced myself to him at the mailbox. He was in his Air Guard uniform and I thanked him for serving our country (my son is also a member of the Air Guard). Many times I'd see Andrew walking Zeus about the same time I was getting home from work. He was a kind man. May God Bless You, the dogs and your family during this most difficult time. His spirit and love will forever live through you. May God bless you and wrap his loving arms around you. Sending prayers and love...

March 9, 2011

Ok my dear Missy, I was told to share a favorite memory, and admit I have trouble picking just 1! I loved the grumpy "there is no way you are doing this" look he gave me when I kissed his forehead the 2 times he left the hospital. I told him I was doing it because I wanted to...and because I know he hated it", and I got the coolest smile. I will always, more than anything, carry the image of your two just being together. You could be sitting there holding hands or across the room in your "special chair", but you could just feel the love, the oneness that you two exhibited every moment of everyday.

I have never met two people that were more perfect for one another than Andy and Missy. As the best memories go, they aren't appropriate to share in public. He was blessed to have the most wonderful wife by his side through everything. We were all blessed to have him touch our lives, even if for just a short time.
