I was her student at Central High School. My life was blest by her influence. I graduated in 1970 so yes I am old. In the many years since I have regularly thought of her. I accidentally found this website and started reading. She was special and I wish she was here now so I could tell her so. If she has close family here please know at least one of her students loved her like family.
Thanks, John Crothers

Mrs. Thompson was probably the teacher who influenced me the most at Northrop. I still have the comments she made, on a self reflective poem I wrote, that were and still are so encouraging to me. Her zest for life and always wanting to challenge herself, also still encourages me. My first ever teas were with her as well - wonderful memories. I am sorry I missed getting to say these things earlier. God Bless.

Mrs. Thompson was my all-time favorite teacher and a terrific mentor. I was recently asked to talk about someone who was an inspiration on my life and she immediately came to mind. I graduated from Northrop in 1980 and, after all these years, have very fond memories of her. Blessing to all who are missing her. I'm grateful to have had her in my life.

She had such a wonderful influence on so many students during her years of teaching. I remember her pulling me aside on three different occasions to give me one on one advice, and I have never forgotten any of it. My prayers are with her family and friends at this time

My fondest memories of my years at Northrop were in Mrs. Thompson's Advanced Literature class. She pushed me; she made me think. I can picture her class, sitting comfortably on the floor, debating some literary work. Her smile as we argued about some key point, knowing this would make us better thinkers. I ran into her once about 15 years ago; it was like we just had class the day before. She was engaging and quite interested in what I had done with my life. And there was that smile!

How many lives can be changed or a direction of a life altered by just one woman. My love of books is all because of her, all these years later I still read with a healthy appetite for more. Now I am writing my story and hope to see it in print soon and it all goes back to her believing in her students and her teachings. Thank you.

Madeline was probably the smartest woman I ever knew. Her area of interest was very diversified. She taught me more than any course I had ever taken. During my first year of teaching, she counseled me, and guided me through every lesson. She basically taught me how to teach. She was also a close personal friend, and gave me solace and a place to stay during a very rough time in my life. I became a better teacher and a better person because of Madeleine Thompson. She helped to shape my life and I will never forget her.

I remember Mrs. Thompson from Central High School. I loved her enthusiasm for reading. She gave me a love for reading that I had never had before. I have thought of her often over the years and wondered how she was doing. I miss her and will always have a special place for her in my heart. God bless her family. I know you will truly miss the gem of a person.

Madeleine was an inspiration to all who knew her-a great and gracious lady-she will be missed by all but at 98 we had to expect that her time was coming. I am sure she's in heaven now with all of her many friends! My condolences to Cora, Jack and Mark!

She was a good friend of my mother. They were roommates on a trip to Canada. She loved music and her family. My condolences to her family.

Cora, John, Mark, I regret that I cannot be there in person to tell you how much Madeleine meant to me as mentor, a colleague, and friend. She was a role model and a guide for me as a new teacher and as a colleague when we team taught classes and as a department chair. She taught me to see past the surface errors students make to understand the real meaning in their writing and to value it. She demonstrated how to challenge students' thinking in creative ways. I became a better teacher because of her. I will also never forget her kindnesses when I became a mother, nor will my daughters who remember visiting her as little girls. Nor can I ever forget her laughter that seemed to resonate inside her before she expressed it in a kind of delighted chortle and usually an "Oh my." Madeleine was a remarkable woman. She left a remarkable legacy. I was blessed to know her. My sympathies to you on her passing.

Mary Madeleine and my mom "Nes" were roommates at Northwestern and forever friends. She introduced her cousin (my dad) to her roommate. Boy, am I glad she did! I can imagine the two of them telling stories and giggling in heaven. Condolences to her family. She was a great lady

I only taught at Northrop for two years, but during that time Madeleine and I became good friends and experimented frequently with elements of team teaching. She was always very positive, loved her work, and was always generous with praise, a delightful colleague. Bill Dillon

I loved Mrs. Thompson. She was an incredible teacher. She taught "to write, you must appy the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair." After reading "Crime and Punishment " as part of our sunmer reading list, I fell in love with Russian literature. I also fell in love with Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises." For graduation she brought me a leather bound copy. She will live in my heart forever...especially every time I apply the seat of my pants to the seat of my chair to write.

A most gracious, accomplished, friend and teacher. Her continued interest in the world and her friends was an inspiration to those who were fortunate to know her. My sincere condolence to the family.

Please accept my condolences. I grew up on Tristam Court, and Mrs. Thompson was a dear friend of my mother, Ann Murphy, who will miss her greatly. Mrs. Thompson was wonderful, warm, intelligent, funny, and dignified and always took an interest in what I was up to. I have particularly vivid memories of a teenage social group that she wanted to get started and which my mother cajoled me into attending. As it happened, I enjoyed it very much, perhaps most especially for the singular pleasure of getting to know Mrs. Thompson!

My senior English teacher at Northrop High School. The impact this lady left on me and my peers can't be measured. Thirty Five years later I can still here her telling me things in her class were not as easy as before, that I would have to focus now. She let me know that doing the expected was less than my best, and I shouldn't settle, since I was entering a more serious time. She was so right.
