Ruby Chumley Obituary

RUBY LEE (NEWBY) CHUMLEY, 88, of Lafayette, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008. Born Sept. 9, 1919, in Tiprell, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Eliza (Condry) Newby. She married James Roy Chumley on Aug. 25, 1934, in Tennessee; he preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1998. He was a cook at Cary Home for Children, Lafayette, which she considered an honor. Surviving are two sons, James Lowell and David (Charlotte) Chumley, both of Lafayette; eight daughters, Jenny (Nathaniel) Stewart of Dayton, Ohio, Evelyn Russell of Tennessee, Blanche (Allen) Payne of Lafayette, Mary Shelton and Sarah Anderson, both of Fort Wayne, Ina (Dick) Smith of Ohio, Brenda (Victor) King of Fort Wayne, and Sheila (Larry) Conn-Thayer of Lafayette; 26 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Charles T. Chumley; a daughter, Bobbie Jo Tutterow; a granddaughter, Darlene Sandlin; a grandson, Timothy Lynn Smith; a great-granddaughter, Katie Anderson; and a great-grandson, Mike Chumley Jr. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Monday at Hippensteel Funeral Home, 822 N. 9th St., Lafayette. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial to follow service in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette. "Ruby loved her family and enjoyed each and every one of them. Her legacy and love will live on forever through their lives as she touched each life in a special way. Ruby will always be remembered for her strength, dignity, and honor. Her word was her bond."
