Sylvia Rutten Obituary

Dr. Sylvia Marlene Rutten, 70, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away on March 19, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Born on December 25, 1954, in Maddock, North Dakota, Sylvia was the daughter of Elmo and Marlene (Alveshere) Waagen. She was raised in West Fargo, North Dakota, and remained in the North Dakota and South Dakota region before making Indiana her permanent home.

Sylvia's life was marked by determination and service. While raising four children, she pursued her dream of becoming a physician. Her dedication led her to a career in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, where she made a lasting impact through her compassionate care. In keeping with her commitment to advancing medical knowledge, Sylvia donated her body to science for research.

She is survived by her fiancé, John Reidenbach; her children: Sheri (Scott) Rough, Brandon (Todd) Rutten, Kristi (Joe) Allen, and Mindi Rutten; four grandchildren; her brother Sherman (Gail) Waagen; and sisters Sheryl (Bill) Lidenberg and Sharon (John) Youland. She is also remembered by Jen Waagen, wife of her late brother Scott. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents and brother Scott.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sylvia's name to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration at www.theaftd.org. A private family gathering will be held to honor Sylvia's life and memory.
