Edward Clancy Obituary
He grew up in Needham, Mass. Ted attended UNH as an undergraduate student. He then went on to William and Mary Law School. Ted practiced law for forty years, starting in Portsmouth with John Wholley, then moving on to Fisher, Moran and Temple in Dover. Ted credits Judge Temple for providing wonderful guidance early in his career. Ted opened his own practice on Fourth Street in Dover in 1990.
Those who knew Ted enjoyed his humor, his dancing skills, and his love of the French language which he stumbled through without caution.
Being outdoors was Ted's priority. He cross country skied, biked, golfed, hiked in the White Mountains, Utah and Alaska. You could set your watch on seeing Ted walking his dog on Spur Road every morning with his two friends, Tom and Frank at 7 a.m.
Ted could be counted on to care for family and friends dogs that needed exercise, on the beach, or at the golf course (searching for golf balls off season was like an Easter egg Hunt for him). Ted's favorite place was the coast of Maine. Christmas Cove and North Haven Island were special places to him, and he returned to visit often.
Ted was a devoted father to Zachary. One of his great joys and privileges was driving the car pool for nine years to Berwick Academy.
Ted was dedicated to his extended family, proudly hosting Thanksgiving each year. Christmas Eve was also his turf; he loved a house full of friends and family.
Ted was known to all to have a huge heart: volunteering at Salvation Army, visiting shut-ins, taking elderly to visit cemeteries, and lending a hand whenever necessary.
Ted was a gently giant, only occasionally demonstrating an Irish temper on the golf course.
Ted leaves behind his wife of 34 years Gretchen Taylor-Clancy; his son Zachary, of Park City, Utah; his brother Paul and sister Pat; and many beloved nieces, nephews and in-laws.
SERVICES: A wake will be held at Farrell's Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Monday, June 10, 4-7 p.m. A Celebration of a life well lived will be held at the Portsmouth Country Club, Greenland, Tuesday, June 11, beginning at 5 p.m. Memorial begins at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to: Cocheco Humane society, 262 County Farm Rd., Dover, NH 03820 or the Salvation Army.

I'm so very sorry, Gretchen. I'll miss Ted's kindness and his wacky wit. I count myself privileged to have been part of the hiking gang in the Whites so many years ago. (Ted was a charmingly defiant hiker, insisting on wearing sneakers on 10-mile hikes up the big mountains -- I would've had countless injuries!) He was a great lawyer with such a kind soul, and we will really miss him. Prayers and hugs to you and Zach.

It was sad to see Ted's obituary. I have such fond memories of working with Ted. His sense of humor was second to none. I still remember playing the Alphabet Game we invented at the office when we should have been working. You will always be remembered for so many wonderful things, rest in peace, Ted.

So sorry to hear of Ted's passing. My sincere condolences to the family. A great guy with a very dry sense of humor! Many times he would come by the barbershop, especially on his lunch walk, just to chew the fat! But never combed his hair! Rest in peace my friend

My sympathy to the family. It was always fun to see Ted. He would drop in the office and made everyone laugh. Ted was a great guy. I am still in shock and heartbroken. Gretchen, family, our deepest sympathies. A soul taken far too early, but a great life.
I would often meet him on Spur Road walking his dogs and I mine, although I would have to turn around before we got too close because mine do not abide other dogs. Once he yelled out "East meets West!" as I turned. One time my bad dog got off the leash in a bad situation. He sprung into action.
A great guy, very smart and funny. We will miss him awfully. I wish I had a photo of him on Spur Road to share but we did not carry our phones.

Ted was the genuine article. A great guy with a quick wit for all. It was important to be on target with Ted or you would find yourself on the receiving end of a sly cut, always in fun. When Ted was over at the house, you quickly realized that he had a good idea where the liquor could be found as Teddy enjoyed celebrating his Irish heritage. The stuff couldn't be too cheap or he'd tell you about it. Lawyers will come and go, but Clancy was different. This picture portrays him perfectly. He loved Gretchen and Zack and, of course, the dogs. I and so many others that we would have lunch with so often will miss Ted. He was great around the table.

Dear Gretchen and Zach, Thinking back to the old days, I will forever be thankful to the Clancy family for sharing your Golden angel Jake with me - and there is no doubt that Jake was definitely a product of his loving family. Ted was truly one-of-a-kind. Not only was he a loving and devoted husband and father, but he was also a brilliant attorney with a great sense of humor, a love of Life and a very big heart.
