Michael Nazemetz Obituary

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Dear Family and Friends: My loving husband, Michael K. Nazemetz, DVM, lost his courageous battle against pancreatic cancer Sunday morning, November 15, 2020. He was home, where he was always happiest. I was blessed to be at his side. We started our journey together in 1976, purchasing our home in 1980 and marrying in January 1983.

Michael was born on March 4, 1950 in Somerville, N.J., son of Mary and John Nazemetz. He was proud of his heritage, both sets of grandparents having emigrated from Ukraine through Ellis Island, settling in New Jersey, Growing up on a dairy/vegetable farm with his maternal grandparents next door, Michael gained a strong work ethic. His innovative resourcefulness was among the many traits acquired from his grandfather. Michael's creativity was vast, he could fix or build just about anything. His talents are evident all around our farm from his hand built barn, sheds and prized sugar shack, to the many rock walls crafted to enhance the landscape and our multiple gardens, plus the orchard he so loved.

A proud graduate of Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, he enjoyed the successful practice of veterinary medicine for over 40 years. In April of 1984, we started Village Veterinary Clinic in Rollinsford, N.H., receiving a National Veterinary Award for Best Use of a Small Space.

Best known as "Dr. Mike" throughout the seacoast area, he will be forever remembered for his compassion, honest practical approach and true empathy for others which won the hearts of hundreds of clients. He treasured his employees, whom he considered family. Mainly, he will be remembered for his unending kindness.

Michael approached everything in his life with deep passion. An avid bicyclist, Michael was a 20 year veteran of the Maine Lung Association's Trek Across Maine. Sailing was one of his many passions; a skilled woodworker, he built two sailboats that he enjoyed racing with friends off the Owls Head peninsula in Penobscot Bay, Maine. He loved fishing, especially when shared with family and friends.

Michael's love of music brought him great joy. He shared the belief that music has the power to change the world. Always the learner, he played guitar and stand-up bass, and loved to sing. He enjoyed gathering monthly with his circle of music friends and listening to local talent.

In past years Michael served on the boards of the Somersworth VNA, the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, and the Susan L. Curtis Foundation. He was an active member of Rotary for over 30 years.

He is survived by his younger brother John and wife Jeanette of Stillwater, Okla., and older sister, Patricia Rydberg and husband Herb of Bridgwater, N.J. His family also includes my sisters, Judith Moses of Camden, Maine, Jane Hall and husband Ron of Tenants Harbor, Maine, and my brothers Edgar Hussey Jr. and wife Sally of Jefferson, Maine and Dennis Hussey and wife Suzanne of Easton, Maine. He also leaves several special cousins.

As a good friend wrote, "Michael was the perfect Uncle, the fun uncle, the playful uncle, the one who teased and still imparted wisdom." He will be forever fondly remembered by our many nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Due to continued restrictions of Covid-19, I invite you to gather in early May for a celebration of Michael's life and a sharing of stories, date TBD.

Please consider making a contribution in honor of Michael K. Nazemetz to The Rotary Foundation PolioPlus, https://www.endpolio.org/donate or to The Susan L Curtis Foundation https://www.susancurtis.org/donate/ that helps economically disadvantaged Maine youth develop the individual character, self-confidence, and skills essential to becoming independent, contributing citizens.

Michael graced the world with his gentle disposition, warm smile, and his ever constant wit and wisdom. A role model and mentor to so many, his passing is a loss for all who knew him. The world has lost a gentleman of the first order.

A life well lived and well loved, I miss him deeply.

With much love, Ann Lee Hussey

We considered Michael to be a friend, although one from afar, who exuded kindness and a caring nature. His soft smile and kind eyes spoke volumes about his character. Michael was a beautiful human being who will always be remembered as a special person - one whom we were so lucky to know along with Ann Lee.

AnnLee, we are so sorry to learn of Mike's passing. For 30 years he lovingly cared for our 4 dogs and 5 litters of pups. His calm demeanor was so wonderful when any of the "girls' were sick and he always knew the right things to do and say. He had a amazing gift of making you feel like his best friend whenever you met him. The world is missing an amazing soul, but it a better place for him having been in it. Our hearts go out to you and your family.

We have been going to Village Vet for 30 years! Dr Nazametz was so knowledgeable and so warm and funny we enjoyed bringing our fur babies in to see him. Dr Michael Nazametz was a very special person and someone I felt grateful was in this World. I can still see his face so clearly when it was our turn to bring our Cat inside the examining room. God bless and comfort all those who knew him and loved him. We will always miss him.

My wife and I were deeply saddened to hear about Mike's passing after learning of the family's loss from my brother Paul. Paul and I were childhood friends with Mike and John, all growing up in Hillsborough Township many years ago.
I was reminded of the four of us playing flag football on the River Road farm back in the 60's on that sloping lawn between the farmhouse and Mike's grandparents house. I also remember being slightly envious that Mike and John could take their rifles and pick off groundhogs in the upper farm fields.
Mike had a gentle chuckle when he laughed that I was also reminded of. Those were good and simpler times for sure.
The Lord took him too soon and we will keep you in our prayers Ann Lee.

We feel such a sense of loss learning of Mike’s passing. For nearly 30 years he cared for our pets, ending with our sibling duo, Puck & Riley. He celebrated with us when we brought them in as pups and comforted us when their time came in old age.
Ann, your tribute to Mike is beautiful and filled in more details and accomplishments than we had known. We hope it comforts you in some small measure to know how fondly he is remembered by so many.

So very sad to hear of Dr. Mike's passing and that is what my special needs son called him for 16 years. Mike saved the life of our cat Freda when she was 2 years old, he did a wonderful job on her mouth when others said she would need reconstructive surgery. Every year he would check out her mouth, smile and say someone did a good job. He was also very kind when Rembrandt had to leave us, not hurrying even though the outer room was full. He always explained to my son what was being done to the cats and I'll always be grateful to him for that. He truly was a good man.

So sorry, Ann, that you and the world have lost Michael. I can't think of any man I respected more than him. He was a friend to all, with his unique wit and compassion, and never ceased to amaze me with his diversity of interests. While I have been out of touch for several years, I still thought of him often. I will miss him, too.

Mike was caring doc to our two cats and our dog, a fellow music lover and guitar player, and just the kindest guy. He always took his time, and didn't rush you but he just naturally spoke fast; sometimes, I had to really pay attention! It was a fun feature of a visit. But whatever he said always was laced with kindness, humor, intuition, and a calm manner that put me and our pets at ease. Our family is so grateful that he was our trusted vet. RIP, dear Dr. Mike.

Mrs. Nazemetz - My sincere condolences to you and your family. Dr. Mike was such a soft spoken doctor who treated both pet parents and their cherished animals with a special kind of gentleness that will truly be missed and always remembered. One has to believe that all of the animals he gave loving care to are at the Rainbow Bridge purring loudly and or licking him all over with their thanks - my dear Jeffrey among them. What a wonderful life lived in the service of others and a legacy for all to learn from. I pray God's loving embrace will give you comfort and strength in the time to come. Take good care.

Ann..you said it all, beautiful tribute, our most sincere condolences to you and your family. Heaven has indeed gained another angel. Dr. Mike has made such a difference and touched the lives of so many. He was much more than a vet to us as he became a member of our family when we saw him on a regular basis for almost 30 years! He gave each of our Labs extraordinary care...Sam for 14 years plus and Jake for 14 years plus! Mike treated each and every one of his patients as if they were his own and went above and beyond to make everyone feel at ease; he was one of a kind and will me missed by anyone that had the pleasure of knowing him.

I moved to South Berwick in 1984. The first person I met who filled me with joy because of his compassion and gentleness and love of animals and love of his beautiful wife was Dr. Mike. Dear Nazemetz family- I am so sorry for your loss. I brought all my animals to Village Veterinary Clinic and always recommended my friends take their pets there. Dr. Mike had a soft spoken voice, took the time to talk with you during each visit, As well as a special gift with animals.

When I had dogs, which I don't now, I ended up with Dr. Mike and so thankful I did. He took such care and concern for my dogs, and they loved him back. They got a small treat if they were good so they sat very still so they could sit in front of him to get that treat. Loved Michaels compassion for their owner and that was fine, I knew Ann and her mom and dad, so meeting Mike I knew it was a great match. He is missed already, by anyone who knew him, May God keep him in heaven with him. Amen.

Dr Mike was so much more than our Pet Doc. I started going to Dr. Mike when he opened his practice. He cared for my animals as well as my parent's. I will never forget him spending 45 minutes on the phone with me as I ugly cried about needing to put my cat down. There is a Welcome Party going on at the Rainbow Bridge! I truly loved Dr. Mike!

Patricia Vincent

November 24, 2020

Many years ago I had a small Italian Greyhound. I hadn't been to his practice for a few years because I had moved, but I I called him one Sunday night because I was so concerned about my little girl. After several trips to our new vet, there was still no diagnosis and my dog had not eaten in a couple of days. My new vet wanted to send out for an obscure test where results wouldn't be back for ten days. I knew I didnt have ten days to wait. The good doctor told me to drop my dog off the next morning and he would watch her for the day. I was never so relieved when he called me a few hours to tell me she had an infection (previous vet didn't detect one and wouldn't retest). He told me she even ate a little food! I will never forget his kindness and concern. Rest in peace good Doctor.

Mike was such a big part of our families lives. He wasn’t just our vet but an amazing friend and neighbor. We would always talk about different motorcycles but especially his BMW. He was truly a kind soul and would come to our house to help with any of our family pets that were ill or not feeling well. To top it all of Mike was a huge supporter of my racing program from my amateur days all the way into my professional career. My deepest condolences to you and your family. Mike will truly be missed by every single life he ever touched.
