Richard Benn Obituary

Richard Fred Benn

PORTSMOUTH - Richard Fred Benn passed away peacefully on November 27, 2014, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Dick was born on September 21 1930, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the son of Frederick Crawford and Frances (Ostrander) Benn.

Dick graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1948 and attended Kings Point Marine Academy. He worked at Texaco Research before joining the Air Force. He was employed at IBM in Poughkeepsie until 1975, when he turned his passion of boating into a family business moving to Dover Point, where he opened and ran Benn's Marina.

Dick was happiest on the water and loved boating. He was a commodore of the New Hamburg, N.Y., Yacht Club for many years. He was a Harbormaster in Portsmouth and ran a fishing charter on his boat the CindySu for many years. After retiring to Lake Winnipesaukee, North Carolina and Florida, Dick and his wife returned to Portsmouth to be near their family.

Dick is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 62 years Joan-Marie (Greenhalgh) and children Cynthia Morrisette, Suzanne and husband Barry Foley, Richard and wife Victoria Benn, and Randy and wife Ariana Benn. His grandchildren, Adam and wife Melanie, Matthew, and Eric Benn, and Eilee and Brynn Foley; Great-grandchildren Abigail, Ethan, Harper, and Colby Benn. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his sister Marjorie Matson.

A memorial service will be held in Dick's honor at a later date.

Dick was a great guy. I got to know Dick quite well in the years I had a boat at his marina. Always quick with a smile, and ready to help at the drop of a hat. His marina party's were lots of fun. My condolences to all of the family.
