Stephen Guppy Obituary

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — Stephen Paul Guppy, 57, passed away Monday, May 10, 2010, at his home from cancer.

Born Feb. 7, 1953, in Lynn, Mass., he was the son of William Guppy and Edith (Hubbard) Guppy.

Stephen was raised and educated in Lynn. He worked as a finish carpenter and enjoyed that immensely, in addition to golf, his two main loves.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Monique (Steele) Guppy; daughter, Ashley Guppy, and son, Joshua Guppy, all of South Berwick, as well as his mother, Edith Guppy; sister, Susan Turner and her husband, Robert Sampson, all of Lakeville, Mass., and a niece and nephew.

He was predeceased by his father, William, and his brother, William, Jr.

Up until his illness, he was an employee of Perry-Murphy Construction in Newburyport, Mass.

"Guppy" was an amazing friend. He had friendships that had continued since he grew up on Hurd Street in Lynn. He lived an amazing life, traveling across Europe when he was 19, backpacking with his close friends. He lived in California for 10 years when he was in his 20s. He enjoyed his work most of all.

He loved to take family and friends for drives through Newburyport to point out certain residences and businesses that he had helped change for the better. He said several times during his illness, "If I could just work one more day." His second love was the game of golf. Amesbury Golf Course was his favorite in addition to his hometown Gannon Golf Course in Lynn. One cannot forget the famous Guppy Country Club at his residence.

There will be a celebration of life ceremony at the Amesbury Country Club from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stephen Guppy Life Fund.

He will be incredibly missed by his wife, children, family and his many, many friends.

Auntie Monique, Ashley & Joshua - I am so sad to learn of the loss of Uncle Stephen. He was the nicest and funniest Uncle we could have ever asked for. There was never a dull moment with Uncle Stephen around. May you find strength in the love of family and in the warm embrace of friends during this time. With much love, Jennifer (Gualberto) Friesz & Family.

Stephen was a terrific, easy going guy. I enjoyed our years of friendship from coaching soccer together to the social gatherings at the houses. He will be missed dearly but always remembered.

Auntie Monique, Ashley + Josh-- I am so saddened by the loss of Uncle Stephen. He was such a great guy and I am fortunate to have known him. He was able to take any moment-- sad or somber-- and turn it upside down. I will always be grateful for how he helped me through Grampy's wake. Love, Christina (Gualberto) Gay + Neale Gay
